NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Tucson International and the Yuma airfield. Afternoons are only a few degrees apart, but Yuma's nights run about 7F warmer in January. Tucson's outlying bases are colder: January lows average 36.1F in Green Valley and 30.6F at Catalina State Park near Oro Valley, so first tee times there carry more frost delays.

Summer is hotter in Yuma, with July normals of about 107F against 100.2F in Tucson, but most snowbirds have left both towns by then. Our Tucson weather by month and Yuma weather for golf guides have the full year.

Courses and variety

Course choice is where Tucson pulls ahead in the Tucson vs Yuma golf comparison. Yuma has 11 courses: eight 18-hole layouts (two of them par 3s) and three nines, with Coyote Wash and Butterfield about 40 minutes east in Wellton.

Tucson's map has 39 courses, from the Tucson Mountains to Tubac. Nine are private, and the Dove Mountain course and the two at Ventana Canyon, such as the Mountain course, need a resort stay. That still leaves a long list for a weekly rotation:

The Haven course guide covers Green Valley's walkable everyday course, and our Tucson golf courses guide lists every course open to visitors.

Getting there

  • Tucson: Tucson International is about 17 minutes from downtown, with nonstops on Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, Sun Country and United to cities including Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Atlanta, Seattle and Minneapolis/St. Paul (seasonal). Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 121 minutes away on I-10 (free-flow estimate).
  • Yuma: Yuma International has American Eagle only, to Phoenix and Dallas/Fort Worth, with high fares seen. Phoenix was 3 hours 14 minutes by Google Maps with Friday traffic.

Neither airport has a nonstop from Canada; Phoenix does, so many Canadians fly into Phoenix for either town. Our Canadian snowbirds in Tucson guide covers flights, drives and day counts.

Overseed and the fall start

Both towns overseed bermuda with rye in the fall. In Yuma, Mesa del Sol does not close for overseed, and Las Barrancas closed one nine at a time in 2026. In Tucson, closures of one to three weeks from mid-September into October are typical; Sewailo closed September 14 to October 1, 2026, and the city's El Rio and Silverbell closed September 15 to October 3 in 2025. Our Tucson golf overseed guide lists the dates found.
