Fact box: Temecula summer golf: how hot it gets, when to tee off and what it costs

Temecula summer golf is hot but manageable if you play early or late. Highs run from about 81F in June to 89F in August at the nearest NOAA station, the inland valley floor is warmer, and green fees and hotel rates are the lowest of the year. Book dawn or twilight tee times and carry water.

Temperatures are from the Fallbrook station (1991-2020 normals), which sits cooler than Temecula, Murrieta and Hemet. Treat the highs as a floor for inland courses.

Quick facts

  • June: 80.8F high, 55.9F low, 4.5 days over 90F, marine-layer mornings.
  • July: 87.2F, 60.0F, 10.2 days over 90F.

Temecula summer golf by month

June80.8 / 55.94.5 / 0.85:3820:00
July87.2 / 60.010.2 / 0.55:5019:59
August89.3 / 61.814.4 / 1.86:1119:35

Sunrise and sunset are computed for the 15th of each month of 2027 at Old Town Temecula, accurate to about two minutes.

When to tee off

Aim for the first hour after sunrise or the last three hours before sunset. With sunrise at 5:38am in June and sunset at 8:00pm, you can finish 18 holes before it warms up or start after the peak. In August, sunset is 7:35pm, so a 4:30pm start leaves room for 18 with a cart. Redhawk listed an $80 4:30pm slot with cart on August 8; see the Redhawk course guide.

Twilight rates exist at a few courses: California Oaks lists $33 about two to three hours before sunset, and 18-hole play there ends at 4:15pm, with 9 holes only after 4:30pm. Echo Hills is $15 daily and $10 from 1:00pm. Hemet Golf Club lists $42 weekday twilight after 1pm and $49 weekend.

Heat tactics

  • Start at first light in July and August.
  • Ride, carry water and wear a hat. Inland courses run hotter than the station figures.
  • Expect low cloud on June mornings; it often clears by late morning.
  • Book a pool or late-afternoon wine tasting for the hot hours, with a driver or tour for the tasting.

Where to stay in summer

Hotel rates are lowest in summer, though Friday and Saturday nights through October are typically the most expensive in wine country. Sunday to Thursday stays are the value play. For a base, see where to stay in Temecula for golf and cheap hotels in Temecula. Hotels in the files have no captured summer rates, so check the booking engine.

Late spring festival

The Balloon & Wine Festival has run in late spring (May 17 to 19, 2024; June 3 to 5, 2022). One 2027 listing gives June 19 to 21, another says not announced. See the Temecula events calendar.

Other seasons

Best time to golf in Temecula ranks every month. Temecula weather by month has the full table. If you want a hotter, drier summer for comparison, look at the Las Vegas summer golf guide; Temecula is milder.

June, July and August are different

June is the gentlest. Highs average 80.8F at the station, there are 4.5 days over 90F, and marine-layer mornings hold the first hours under cloud. Summer rates begin at many courses.

July is the first hot month: 87.2F, 10.2 days over 90F, and almost no rain. Dawn and twilight golf are the plan.

August is the warmest at the station: 89.3F, 14.4 days over 90F and 1.8 days over 100F. Early-harvest grapes begin to come in late in the month, so wine-country weekends start to fill again.

Summer trade-offs

Long days: up to 14h22 of daylight in JuneAn early alarm for dawn tee times

Hemet and Soboba in the heat

Soboba Springs is 50 minutes from Old Town and in the hotter Hemet valley, so a dawn tee time matters even more. Its published rates are $100 Monday to Thursday and $125 Friday to Sunday, with a $70 senior rate; no summer sheet was found. The Soboba Casino Resort is 4 minutes from the course. See Soboba Springs golf.

Summer on a long stay

Summer is not snowbird season. The Pechanga RV Resort package rates and monthly rentals in our files are winter listings. If you are staying for weeks in summer, ask each RV park or landlord for a summer quote. See Temecula RV parks.

Summer golf checklist

  • Book the earliest slot that suits you, then confirm cart rules on the day.
  • Keep water in the cart and the bag.
  • Wear sun protection, since summer is almost dry.
  • Plan a driver for any afternoon wine tasting.
  • Check each pro shop for aeration dates, since many courses aerate greens at least once a year.
  • Leave the afternoon free, because the hottest hours are the least pleasant on a course.

Plan it on the map

Open the Temecula golf map to find the closest courses to your base, so the drive stays short on a hot day. The $49 plan can set dawn and twilight tee times across the days of your trip.

Questions golfers ask

How hot is Temecula in summer?

At the nearest NOAA station (Fallbrook 5 NE) highs are 80.8F in June, 87.2F in July and 89.3F in August, with 4.5, 10.2 and 14.4 days over 90F. That station is cooler than the valley floor around Temecula, Murrieta and Hemet, so inland courses run hotter. The difference was not quantified.

Are Temecula green fees cheaper in summer?

Yes. Summer brings the lowest green fees and hotel rates of the year. Examples we saw: a Redhawk 4:30pm slot at $80 with cart on August 8, California Oaks walking deals from $11.99, and Echo Hills at $15 daily and $10 from 1:00pm.

What is June Gloom?

Marine-layer low cloud that holds mornings in the valley in late spring and June, following May Gray. It usually lifts later in the day, so early rounds can be cool and grey even in June.

When should I tee off in a Temecula summer?

At dawn or twilight. Sunrise is about 5:38am in June, 5:50am in July and 6:11am in August; sunset is about 8:00pm, 7:59pm and 7:35pm. A first-light tee time or a late-afternoon round avoids the hottest hours.

Is Temecula cooler than Palm Springs in summer?

The research describes inland Temecula summers as hot and dry but milder than Palm Springs or Las Vegas. Mornings in May and June often start under marine-layer cloud.

Does it rain in Temecula in summer?

Almost never. June gets 0.12 inches, July 0.08 and August 0.22 at the Fallbrook station, over one to two rain days a month.

Do Temecula courses overseed in summer?

No overseed work was found for summer. Fall aeration and overseeding starts in mid-September, so a late-August trip is clear of it. Ask the pro shop about greens aeration, which many courses also do in spring.
