Course elevations: Laughlin vs Yuma winter golf: two Colorado River snowbird towns compared

For Laughlin vs Yuma winter golf, Yuma wins on warmth and price: January afternoons average about 70F, full-length public rounds ran $65 to $75 with a cart, and several courses sell season passes. Laughlin is closer to Las Vegas and Canada by road, adds casino nights and a lake town, and suits shorter stays and higher-end golf.

Both towns sit on the lower Colorado River, both fill with winter visitors from Canada, the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest, and both overseed their bermuda with rye so the fairways stay green from fall to spring. For a snowbird choosing where to spend two to twelve weeks, the differences are weather, golf cost, passes, lodging and travel. This guide compares them with the figures on our Laughlin and Yuma maps, seen in October 2026. Prices change.

Quick facts

  • January normals: Yuma 69.8F / 47.9F; Laughlin 64.5F / 44.6F (NOAA 1991-2020).

Laughlin's December and January mornings average about 44F, cold enough for frost delays on the first tee times. Lake Havasu City, at the south end of the Laughlin map, runs within about a degree of Laughlin by day and a little cooler at dawn. Our Laughlin weather by month guide has the full year.

Several courses near Laughlin, including Mojave Resort and Huukan, publish no 2026-27 rates, so they are left out. Laughlin Ranch is the most demanding course in either town (143 slope from 7,155 yards) and the most expensive; local residents with a local ZIP code pay $95 to $105 there in winter, so ask whether your winter address qualifies. The Laughlin Ranch course guide has every rate band, and Yuma golf courses covers the Yuma side.

Overseed: arriving in October

Both towns close courses in the fall to overseed, but on slightly different calendars. Near Laughlin in 2026, El Rio closed September 1 to 27, Mojave Resort September 8 to October 8 and Riverview September 14 to October 12, and Lake Havasu Golf Club's Desert West was still closed in late October. In Yuma, courses close in turn from mid to late September and reopen on new rye through the second half of October, and Mesa del Sol does not close for overseed at all. Either way, a snowbird arriving after about mid-October finds most golf open, and by November both towns are on fresh rye. See Laughlin golf overseed.

Getting there

Laughlin is the easier trip from Las Vegas and from western Canada. From the Las Vegas airport rental car center it is about 99 miles, and WestJet flies nonstop to Las Vegas daily from Calgary and Vancouver, six days a week from Edmonton and twice a week from Winnipeg; Air Canada also flies daily from Vancouver. By road from Alberta, both towns are reached via I-15 and Las Vegas. Calgary to Yuma is about 23.5 hours, and Laughlin is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours closer, an estimate rather than a measured figure.

Yuma takes more effort. Its airport has only American Eagle, to Phoenix and Dallas/Fort Worth, so most visitors fly into Phoenix (about 189 miles, 3 hours 14 minutes by Google Maps on a Friday) or San Diego (about 177 miles). The Canadian snowbirds in Laughlin guide covers flights and the drive in more detail.

The clocks

Yuma keeps Arizona time all year, and so do Bullhead City, Fort Mohave and Lake Havasu City. Laughlin, Nevada, is on Pacific time, so from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027 the Laughlin casinos and Mojave Resort run an hour behind Yuma, Laughlin Ranch, Huukan and the Havasu courses. A snowbird living in a Bullhead City RV park keeps the same clock as Yuma; the time zone only bites when crossing the bridge. See the Laughlin time zone guide.

Which town suits you

Choose Yuma for the warmest, driest winter and the cheapest golf: published passes, $65 to $75 rounds and RV parks from about $700 to $1,100 a month. Start with Yuma winter golf for snowbirds or the Yuma map.

Choose Laughlin if you want casinos and the river on the doorstep, a shorter trip from Las Vegas or Alberta, a harder course in Laughlin Ranch, or Lake Havasu City as a second base. The Laughlin winter golf guide explains how a season works there.

Plan it on the map

Every Laughlin course, RV park and rental area in this comparison is on the Laughlin 3D map, with drive times, tee ratings and rates seen in October 2026. The $30 plan can cover a whole winter stay with a weekly course rotation built around your base.
