Guide emblem: Laughlin golf overseed: fall closures and winter conditions

Laughlin golf overseed season runs from early September to early November. Most courses close for two to four weeks while ryegrass grows in over the dormant bermuda, and a few go later. In fall 2026, closures ran from El Rio's September 1 start to Chaparral's reseeding through November 10. Check each course before booking.

The Laughlin golf overseed is why the river courses are green all winter. It is also why a late-September golf trip can go wrong. Here is what each course published about its 2026 Laughlin golf overseed, read on October 27.

Quick facts

  • Why: bermudagrass goes dormant and brown in the cool months; rye keeps courses green from about October to May.
  • Typical closure: two to three weeks, somewhere between early September and mid-October.
  • Late closers in 2026: Emerald Canyon (Oct 1 to Nov 1), the Lake Havasu West course (late October into November) and Chaparral (until Nov 10).
  • After reopening: expect cart-path-only or limited play for a short time.
  • Safest window: mid-November onward.
  • Price note: Laughlin Ranch charges its top rate right after overseed.

How overseeding works on the river

Most courses from Laughlin to Lake Havasu are bermudagrass. Bermuda thrives in the heat and goes dormant and brown in the cool months. To stay green through winter, most courses overseed with ryegrass each fall.

The course closes while the rye germinates, usually for two to three weeks. Some 36-hole clubs overseed one course at a time so the other stays open. After reopening, expect cart-path-only rules or limited play for a short period. Some courses may skip overseeding and play on dormant bermuda, which is brown and firm.

The Laughlin and Bullhead City courses

Mojave Resort, beside the Avi on the Nevada side, was closed September 8 to October 8, 2026. The Arizona Golf Association schedule lists its reopening as October 9. It is now open daily from dawn to 5 PM. The Mojave Resort course guide has more.

The Mojave Golf site says sister course Huukan in Fort Mohave is closed from June 1 until overseeding is complete, approximately October 1. An older listing gave the same October 1 date. Call ahead before an early-fall round.

Laughlin Ranch overseeds each fall. Its 2026 dates were not found, but in 2024 it closed September 9-27 and reopened with a tournament on September 29. Its rate table starts the top band on September 21, which points to a late-September reopening. See the Laughlin Ranch course guide.

Riverview, the par-3 nine in the RV resort, closed September 14 to October 12, 2026 and was selling public tee times again by late October.

Chaparral is the late one. The city-run nine is closed for reseeding through November 10, 2026, which rules it out for anyone arriving in early November.

Fort Mohave, Mohave Valley and Needles

Los Lagos closes September 10-23 every year, according to the Go Lake Havasu directory. A 2020 review said only the tees were overseeded, not the fairways. It had tee times on sale for October 28, 2026.

El Rio closed September 1-27, 2026, per the Arizona Golf Association schedule. Reviews mention thin fairways while the overseed fills in, so call ahead in the fall.

Rivers Edge in Needles has no published overseed dates. Call 760-326-3931 before a September or October visit.

Lake Havasu City and Parker

Lake Havasu Golf Club overseeds its two courses in turn so one stays open. On October 27, 2026 the public sheet showed Desert East times for October 28 and November 3, and no West times on any date checked from October 28 to November 5. The Arizona Golf Association lists both courses with dates as "Contact", and a directory says the West closes "a few weeks in October". No reopening date was published; call 928-855-2719.

Iron Wolf overseeded in fall 2026 and reopened October 7, according to Havasu News. Reviewers have also complained about greens aerated shortly before play with little notice, so ask when you book.

Emerald Canyon near Parker is one of the late closers. Its rates page says October 1 to November 1, 2026; the Arizona Golf Association lists October 5 to November 2.

Winter conditions once the rye is in

After the Laughlin golf overseed, the courses settle into their winter shape. November brings mid-70s highs and dry days on new rye, and it is one of the best golf months of the year. December is cooler, with mid-60s afternoons and the coldest mornings of the year at about 44F, so short days push tee sheets into late morning and midday.

January and February add frost risk and the area's small rainy season. Laughlin averages about 1.02 inches of rain in January and 1.16 inches in February, over three to four days each month. The rye is at its best from January to March, and that is when the winter visitors fill the tee sheets.

Hours change with the season too. Los Lagos, for example, posts fall hours of 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM from September 24 to December 31, then 6 AM to 6 PM from January to May.

Overseed and price

Fresh rye is not discounted here. At Laughlin Ranch, September 21 to November 19 is the highest rate band, $169 Friday to Sunday and $159 Monday to Thursday for non-residents on the table labelled 2027. That matches late February to mid-April. July 12 to September 20, just before overseed, is the cheapest at $87 and $80.

Planning around the Laughlin golf overseed

  • Early to mid-September: several courses close. Check every course before booking.
  • Late September to early October: courses reopen in turn, some cart-path-only. Mojave Resort stayed closed to October 8 in 2026.
  • Mid to late October: most courses are back. Lake Havasu West, Emerald Canyon and Chaparral may still be shut.
  • Mid-November on: every course with published 2026 dates has reopened, and November brings mid-70s highs on new rye.

Winter conditions hold from there. The rye is at its best from January to March, which is also the winter-visitor peak. See the best time to golf in Laughlin, Laughlin winter golf and Laughlin tee times. Other desert towns follow the same pattern: compare Mesquite's September overseed and Yuma golf overseed.

Plan it on the map

The Laughlin golf map marks each course's overseed closure against your dates. The $30 plan routes a fall trip around the closed courses, or builds a winter stay rotation that starts once the rye is in.
