Downtown Myrtle Beach and the boardwalk
The oceanfront boardwalk runs about 1.2 miles, from roughly the 14th Avenue North pier to the 2nd Avenue pier, with the SkyWheel observation wheel, arcades, bars and shops. It is the evening walk for groups staying downtown. Pier 14's restaurant has an outdoor deck over the surf a short walk from the SkyWheel, and Mount Atlanticus is a multi-level mini golf course a few blocks away in a town that bills itself as a mini-golf capital.
For golf, Pine Lakes, the 1927 "Granddaddy," is about 10 minutes from the SkyWheel, and Whispering Pines, the city course by the airport, about 8. See the Pine Lakes course guide.
Broadway at the Beach, Topgolf and the Pelicans
Broadway at the Beach is the big lakeside entertainment and shopping complex on the US 17 Bypass at 29th Avenue North: restaurants, bars, Ripley's Aquarium with its moving-walkway shark tunnel, WonderWorks and big crowds in season. Across the road, Pelicans Ballpark hosts minor-league baseball in spring and summer, an easy group night.
Golf extras sit close by. Topgolf Myrtle Beach, at 2850 Robert M. Grissom Parkway, has heated hitting bays with food and drink. The PGA TOUR Superstore near Broadway has hitting bays and club fitting. Our driving range guide covers both.
From the Hampton Inn Broadway at the Beach, Pine Lakes and Myrtlewood are 7 minutes away.
North Myrtle Beach and Barefoot Landing
Barefoot Landing is a waterfront shopping and dining village on the Intracoastal Waterway off US 17, next to the Barefoot Resort courses. It has Greg Norman's Australian Grille, the Alabama Theatre for variety shows and touring acts, Alligator Adventure for families, and Crooked Hammock Brewery. From the Barefoot villas, the Love, Fazio and Norman courses are 4 minutes and the Dye 5.
Further north, Cherry Grove Pier is a long oceanfront fishing pier with a walk-on fee, good for a sunrise or post-round line in the water. Hawaiian Rumble, on US 17, is the North Strand's volcano-themed mini golf course with batting cages. Our North Myrtle Beach golf guide covers the courses around it.
Restaurant Row and North Kings Highway
Between downtown and Barefoot, North Kings Highway carries the shows and dinner theatres. The Carolina Opry, a long-running music and comedy theatre, sits at the north end of Restaurant Row, and Pirates Voyage, a pirate-themed dinner show with acrobatics, is nearby. One of the two Tanger outlet centres is on US 17 North close to Restaurant Row.
The South Strand: MarshWalk, Brookgreen and Huntington Beach
The Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is a half-mile boardwalk along the inlet marsh, linking seafood restaurants and bars with live music. It is the South Strand's best night out, and the Hampton Inn Murrells Inlet is close by. From there, Wachesaw East is 6 minutes and TPC Myrtle Beach 8. See our Murrells Inlet golf guide and the TPC Myrtle Beach course guide.
Brookgreen Gardens, on US 17 between Murrells Inlet and Litchfield, has sculpture gardens, a lowcountry zoo and rice-plantation history. It is a half-day for non-golfers or a rainout morning.
Huntington Beach State Park, across US 17, has an undeveloped beach, salt marsh and a freshwater lagoon known for birding and alligators, plus Atalaya, the Huntingtons' 1930s Moorish-style winter home. There is an SC State Parks entry fee.
Hammock Shops Village in Pawleys Island, around the original hammock makers, is a short stop on the way to South Strand courses such as Caledonia and True Blue. See the Caledonia course guide.
South Myrtle Beach and the Market Common
The Market Common, on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base a few minutes from MYR, is a walkable shopping and dining district with quieter evenings than Ocean Boulevard. Myrtle Beach State Park, on US 17 Business near it, has a fishing pier, a maritime forest trail and a campground; the Aero Club short course is 6 minutes from the campground, and Prestwick 11. The small Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum, in a 1920s-style beach house opposite Springmaid Beach, is a quiet hour indoors.
Inland: Conway and the preserve
Downtown Conway, with its Riverwalk, makes a break from the beach strip for groups playing the inland courses. The Horry County Museum covers county and natural history and pairs with lunch in town. Coastal Carolina University is home to the Hackler Course. Off SC 90, the Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve protects Carolina bays and longleaf pine and is known for native Venus flytraps and pitcher plants; its trails are unpaved and sparsely signed.
