Courses west to east: Las Vegas weather by month, read as golf advice

Las Vegas weather by month splits into a warm, dry spring and fall that suit golf best, a cool winter with frosty mornings, and a summer that tops 100F on about 78 days a year. Rain is rare in every month: the airport averages just 4.18 inches a year. Plan tee times around frost from December to February and heat from June to September.

The figures below are NOAA 1991-2020 normals from Harry Reid International Airport, about 3 miles southeast of the Strip. They are averages, not forecasts, and the notes turn each one into golf advice.

Quick facts

  • Warmest: July, 104.5F high and 82.0F low.
  • Coolest: December, 56.9F high and 39.6F low.
  • Wettest by days: February, 4.1 rain days.
  • Freezing nights: about 9.8 a year, mostly December and January.
  • Over 100F: about 78 days a year, June to September.
  • Station: valley floor at about 2,180 feet; the higher courses run cooler at dawn.

Rain days count days with at least 0.01 inches. Daylight is computed for the 15th of each month of 2027 at the Strip at Flamingo Road, to about two minutes. Wind normals were not part of our research, so there is no wind column.

Elevation: why the courses can feel different

The airport sits on the valley floor. Many courses are higher: Angel Park in Summerlin sits at nearly 3,000 feet, and the Anthem, Summerlin and Boulder City courses are all up the slopes. NOAA does not publish normals for those spots, so we cannot say by how much, but expect a few degrees cooler at dawn and frost that lingers longer there in December and January. See the Angel Park course guide for the Mountain course.

Winter: December to February

December is the coolest month, at 56.9F by day and 39.6F at night, with about five freezing nights. January is a touch warmer by day (58.5F) with about three freezing nights. February warms to 62.9F but has the most rain days, about four.

What it means for golf:

  • Frost delays. Early tee times are often pushed back, so book from mid-morning in December and January.
  • Short days. Sunset is about 4:27pm in mid-December, and some courses close early: Desert Willow in Henderson closes at 4pm from November 1 to January 10, 2027.
  • Dormant turf. Most courses are bermuda overseeded with rye and stay green. Reflection Bay overseeds only its tees, and its paspalum fairways go off-colour in cold snaps.
  • Dress in layers. A 40F start and a 60F finish is a normal winter round.

Our Las Vegas golf in winter guide covers rates and frost tactics.

Spring: March to May

March reaches 71F and drops to about 2.8 rain days. April, at 78.5F with 1.6 rain days and no freezing nights, is about as good as Las Vegas weather by month gets for golf. May climbs to 88.5F with about 16 days over 90F and three over 100F, so afternoon rounds start to get hot by late May. Daylight saving starts March 14, 2027, and mid-April sunsets are about 7:14pm, enough for a 36-hole day.

Summer: June to August

June averages 99.4F and is almost completely dry (0.04 inches). July is the peak at 104.5F with 82F lows, and August is close behind at 102.8F. Monsoon moisture brings occasional thunderstorms and wind from July to September, but monthly rain stays around a third of an inch.

The practical rules for summer golf:

  1. Take the first tee time of the day; sunrise is about 5:25-6:00am.
  2. Ride, and carry far more water than usual.
  3. Finish before midday.
  4. Check heat rules: the lighted North Las Vegas par-3 course lists closures at 107F or above, 43F or below, or winds over 25 mph.

See Las Vegas summer golf for the summer rates that make the heat worth it.

Fall: September to November

September is still hot (94.9F with about eight days over 100F) and is overseed month, when many courses close or play temporary greens. October cools to 81.2F and is dry, and the courses come back on fresh rye. November, at 67.1F by day and 47.3F at night with 1.5 rain days, is one of the best months for golf. Daylight is the constraint: clocks go back on November 1, 2026 and sunset is about 4:33pm by mid-November. See Las Vegas golf in October and November.

Rain and storms: how often is a golf day lost?

Very rarely. The wettest month by days, February, averages about four days with at least a hundredth of an inch, for 0.8 inches in the month. From April to June there is barely one rain day a month, and June averages 0.04 inches. Winter storms are the most likely to cost you a round, and the summer monsoon (July to September) brings short, sometimes windy thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. Our weather file did not include lightning or wind statistics, so check the forecast the night before and keep a flexible tee time in the summer months.

The best tee time by season

The windows are our reading of the normals and sunset times, not course rules; each course sets its own first tee time and frost policy.

Using the weather to pick courses

Cold mornings favour courses close to the valley floor for early times, and the higher Summerlin and Anthem courses for late-morning starts. In summer, the closer the course, the earlier you can tee off: TPC Las Vegas is 22 minutes from the Strip, while the Paiute Wolf course is 38 minutes and Boulder City Golf Course 41 minutes. The Revere in Anthem is 26 minutes. See the TPC Las Vegas course guide.

For the month-by-month price side of the decision, read the best time to golf in Las Vegas and the Las Vegas golf overseed guide. Mesquite, 80 miles up I-15, has its own Mesquite golf weather by month page, and the river towns are covered in Laughlin weather for golf.

Questions golfers ask

What is the weather like in Las Vegas in January for golf?

Cool and mostly dry. January averages 58.5F highs and 40.5F lows at the airport, with about three rain days and three nights below freezing. Frost delays are common on early tee times, so a mid-morning start is the safer booking.

How many days a year is Las Vegas over 100F?

About 78 on average at Harry Reid airport (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Most fall in June (17), July (26) and August (25), with about 8 in September and 3 in May. Summer golf is a dawn activity.

What is the rainiest month in Las Vegas?

February, with about 4.1 days of measurable rain and 0.8 inches on average. The whole year averages only 4.18 inches. A rained-out golf day is rare in any month.

Does it freeze in Las Vegas?

Yes, on a few nights a year. The airport averages 9.8 nights a year below 32F, mostly in December (4.6) and January (3.3). Summerlin, Anthem and Boulder City sit higher and can be colder at dawn.

Is Las Vegas windy for golf?

Our weather file does not include wind normals, so we cannot give monthly figures. Monsoon storms from July to September can bring wind with them. The North Las Vegas par-3 course lists a closure rule for winds over 25 mph, which shows courses do act on it.

When is sunset in Las Vegas in winter?

About 4:27pm in mid-December and 4:50pm in mid-January, computed for the Strip. That gives under ten hours of daylight, so a 36-hole day needs an early first tee time that is not held up by frost.

Is Las Vegas colder than Phoenix in winter?

Yes. Our Las Vegas file notes that winter here is cooler than Phoenix or Palm Springs, with January highs about 59F and frosty dawns. Bring layers for the first few holes.
