Courses west to east: Summer Golf in Gulf Shores: How to Beat the Heat and Find the Deals

Summer golf in Gulf Shores means hot, humid mornings and stormy afternoons: highs average about 87 to 89°F from June to August, with rain on 11 to 13 days a month. Golf is the off-peak product, so tee sheets are open and some courses discount, but rooms cost the most of the year. Tee off at dawn, check aeration dates, and plan around Saturday traffic.

If you're already at the beach with the family, or you can only travel in summer, it's still good golf. You just have to play it differently.

Summer weather on the Alabama Gulf Coast

There's no long-term weather station in Gulf Shores itself. These are NOAA 1991-2020 normals for Pensacola NAS, the nearest coastal station, about 24 miles east. Wind is the average daily speed at Jack Edwards Airport in Gulf Shores (2016-2025), and water temperature is from NOAA's Pensacola gauge (2016-2025).

Month Normal high Normal low Rain (in) Rain days Avg wind Gulf water
June87°F72°F6.3110.66.4 mph84°F
July89°F74°F6.3713.35.1 mph87°F
August89°F73°F5.7313.35.0 mph87°F
September86°F70°F6.779.05.0 mph84°F

Three things stand out. Nights barely cool off, with lows in the 70s, so even a 7 AM tee time is warm. Rain comes mostly as pop-up afternoon thunderstorms. And July to September is the calmest stretch of the year, around 5 mph. That takes the edge off Kiva Dunes, where wind is usually the main defense.

Inland is hotter. NOAA's Fairhope station on the Eastern Shore averages about 91°F in July and August, with rain on 14 to 15 days.

How to play summer golf in Gulf Shores

  • Book the first tee times. Gulf Shores Golf Club warns about afternoon heat and storm cells, and the safest summer round there, or anywhere nearby, starts before 9 AM.
  • Expect a cart. Kiva Dunes and Gulf Shores Golf Club include carts, Gulf Shores Golf Club doesn't allow walking, and walking isn't allowed at the Grand Hotel's Lakewood Club.
  • Expect afternoon storms. July and August average rain on about 13 days each, mostly in the afternoon, so a late tee time is the one most likely to get wet.
  • Pack for humidity. Extra gloves, a towel and plenty of water. Gulf Shores Golf Club runs a beverage cart year-round.

Summer golf in Gulf Shores: the green fees we found

Many courses don't publish summer rates, and in October 2026 their tee sheets didn't reach that far. These are the figures we found. Rates change, so check before you book.

Perdido Bay's late twilight is one of the better summer values: $50 for 18 after 4 PM, and its card says prices include tax.

The RTJ summer specials are booked through RTJ Reservations for at least two days, at least 48 hours ahead, with cart and unlimited range balls included, plus tax. They're a long drive from the beach: Lakewood at the Grand Hotel is about 51 minutes from central Gulf Shores and Magnolia Grove in Mobile about 96. See the RTJ Trail from Gulf Shores.

Summer aeration dates to avoid

Many Gulf Coast bermuda courses aerify greens in summer, roughly June to August, and sometimes close or go cart-path-only for a few days. There's no area-wide schedule, and most of the beach courses don't publish dates. The RTJ Trail does:

Course 2026 dates 2027 dates Recovery
Lakewood DogwoodJun 1-7Jun 7-1114 days
Lakewood AzaleaAug 3-9Aug 2-614 days
Magnolia Grove FallsNot postedJun 14-1814 days
Magnolia Grove CrossingsNot postedJul 12-1614 days
Magnolia Grove Short CourseNot postedMay 24-28 and Aug 2-614 days

Schedules are weather dependent. For Kiva Dunes, Gulf Shores Golf Club, Craft Farms, Peninsula, GlenLakes, Lost Key and Perdido Bay, call the shop and ask for aeration dates before you lock in a summer tee time.

Summer lodging: the expensive part

With summer golf in Gulf Shores, the golf gets cheaper and the rooms don't. Summer is peak beach season, from Memorial Day (May 31, 2027) to Labor Day (Sept 6, 2027), with the July 4 week the busiest of all. Mid-July weeknight snapshots for July 14, 2027, seen on hilton.com in October 2026 (before tax, typical, not quotes):

Hotel Mid-July weeknight Mid-January weeknight
Island House Hotel$530-$574$137-$160
Hampton Inn & Suites Orange Beach$305-$431$113-$210
Hilton Garden Inn Orange Beach$242-$307about $142 (Nov 1, 2026)

From winter to summer those rates rise by roughly 70% to nearly four times. If the trip is mainly golf, compare the inland hotels on Hwy 59 and in Foley as well; they're closer to Craft Farms and GlenLakes. Compare options in our Gulf Shores golf hotels guide.

Saturday traffic and summer events

  • Saturday changeover. Condo check-in and check-out day jams Hwy 59 and the Beach Express. On Labor Day 2026, traffic backed up on Hwy 59 near I-10 before 11 AM. Don't book an early Saturday tee time across town on arrival day.
  • Blue Angels Pensacola Beach Air Show. Mid-July (Jul 15-18 in 2026; 2027 not yet published). Expect traffic on Perdido Key and the Pensacola bridges, which affects Lost Key and Perdido Bay.
  • Kiva Beach Club, the private pool and beach for Kiva Dunes resort guests, is open March to November.

Hurricane season

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. On this part of the Gulf, the main risk window is August to October, and the statistical Atlantic peak is around September 10. Hurricane Sally made landfall at Gulf Shores on Sept 16, 2020 as a Category 2, and Ivan came ashore near Gulf Shores on Sept 16, 2004 as a Category 3. Both damaged courses and beachfront property, and a storm can close courses for days to weeks.

For an August or September trip, read cancellation terms first. The Beach Club Resort and Turquoise Place give no refunds for hurricane evacuation inside their cancellation windows. Hotel brands like Hilton usually offer flexible rates, but check the rate you book.

Easy golf for a family beach week

If golf is a side trip on a family vacation:

  • Orange Beach Golf Center is the city's 9-hole par-3 with a lighted range listed as open 7 AM to 9 PM (the city posts separate summer range hours, so check): $5 for a 34-ball bucket, rental clubs $25 adult and $10 youth.
  • GlenLakes' 9-hole Lakes course sells public times at about $25 to $43 online, a cheap late-day loop.
  • Magnolia Grove's Short Course in Mobile is 18 full-length par 3s, walkable and good for mixed-ability groups.

Gulf Shores Golf Club itself warns about afternoon heat and storm cells, so tee off early, ideally before 9 AM.

Is golf cheaper in Gulf Shores in the summer?

Golf is the off-peak product in summer, while lodging is at its most expensive. Published examples include Perdido Bay's twilight at $50 after 4 PM (May 5-Aug 24, 2026 card) and a GolfNow rate of $55.72 with cart at Soldiers Creek in August 2026.
