Locator map: 30A vs Destin: where to base a golf trip on the Emerald Coast

30A vs Destin for a golf trip comes down to which golf you want. Destin puts most of the coast's public courses within 5 to 20 minutes. East 30A is the base for the private Watersound Club courses, which you can only play by staying at Camp Creek Inn or Watersound Inn. Central 30A, around WaterColor and Seaside, is a beach base 26 to 40 minutes from most golf.

This guide compares the drive times, the golf each base unlocks, the costs we could confirm and the roads, then says who should stay where.

Quick facts

  • Public golf near the base: Destin, by a wide margin.
  • Private golf: east 30A; Camp Creek Inn and Watersound Inn guests pay $295 a round.
  • Only public course on 30A: Origins, a six- or ten-hole family short course.
  • Private, no visitors: Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club.
  • Roads: 30A is two lanes with low speed limits and bikes; US 98 is badly congested on spring-break and summer Saturdays.
  • Airports: VPS for Destin; ECP for east 30A.

Drive times from each base

Routed free-flow times from a hotel in each area. Add 20 to 60 minutes or more on spring-break and summer Saturdays.

The pattern is clear. Destin is close to Destin's courses and a quarter of an hour from Sandestin. West 30A, at the US 98 end near Topsail Hill, is actually closer to Sandestin than Destin is. Central and east 30A are a long way from public golf.

What a Destin base gets you

Destin's public core is three strong courses and one value round, all within 8 minutes of the Henderson Beach Resort or east Destin:

  • Kelly Plantation: renovated in 2024, about $90 to $119 on late-October 2026 GolfNow deals. See the Kelly Plantation course guide.
  • Regatta Bay: the toughest in Destin, slope 147 from the tips, about $91 to $190.
  • Emerald Bay: Bob Cupp on the bay, about $97 to $140, with mixed October 2026 reviews.
  • Indian Bayou: the value round, with afternoons near $75. See the Indian Bayou course guide.

Sandestin's Raven, Baytowne and Links are 14 to 17 minutes east and take public play. Burnt Pine is only for members and registered Sandestin resort guests (after 1 PM, booked by phone), so a Destin base rules it out. Destin also has the harbour for nights out, with AJ's, Boshamps and McGuire's all on or by the harbour. Our where to stay in Destin for golf compares the Destin hotels.

What a 30A base gets you

East 30A (Watersound, Inlet Beach, Rosemary Beach) is for the private St. Joe courses. Overnight guests of Camp Creek Inn and Watersound Inn can play Camp Creek (Fazio), Shark's Tooth (Norman) and The Third (Davis Love III, 2025) at $295 per golfer per round, green and cart, booked through the concierge. Each has a weekly closed day: Camp Creek Monday, Shark's Tooth Tuesday, The Third Wednesday. After Hurricane Isaias in October 2026, Shark's Tooth was closed until further notice and Camp Creek was on its front nine only, so check first. Our Watersound Club golf guide has the full rules.

The Pearl in Rosemary Beach points its guests to Origins; its old Watersound Club access is not current. WaterColor Inn guests' access to the private courses is not confirmed for 2026, so ask.

Central 30A (WaterColor, Seaside, Grayton) is a beach base. The nearest full public course is Windswept Dunes at Freeport, 38 minutes from WaterColor Inn: 7,752 yards from the tips and about $105 to $129 with cart on fall 2026 deals. See the Windswept Dunes course guide.

West 30A and Santa Rosa Beach is the compromise. Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club is private and not open to visitors, but Sandestin is minutes away, and the Home2 Suites (opened 2023) offers kitchenettes and free breakfast per aggregators. The Topsail Hill campground is 10 minutes from Baytowne for RVers. Our 30A golf guide covers this stretch.

Roads, evenings and getting around

CR 30A runs from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach as a slow two-lane beach road with low speed limits and bikes, so allow extra time to any tee. US 98 is the only through road along the coast and backs up through Destin and Miramar Beach on spring-break and summer Saturdays. Uber and Lyft operate in Walton County, with summer surge pricing common on 30A. Golf carts are not allowed on Rosemary Beach roads.

In the evening, 30A is walkable in places: Seaside, WaterColor and Rosemary Beach all have restaurants on foot, from Bud and Alley's to Edward's. Destin's evenings centre on the harbour. See where to eat in Destin.

Who should stay where

  • Public-golf groups: Destin. Four strong public courses within 8 minutes, Sandestin within 17.
  • Sandestin golfers who want a 30A feel: west 30A, minutes from Baytowne and the Raven. Or stay inside Sandestin for guest rates and Burnt Pine.
  • Private-course golfers: east 30A at Camp Creek Inn or Watersound Inn.
  • Couples on a beach trip with one or two rounds: central 30A, driving to golf.
  • Value seekers: Destin or Fort Walton Beach, not 30A.

For the bigger picture, see Destin golf resorts and Destin vs Panama City Beach golf for the east signpost. Our Raven course guide covers Sandestin's top public course.
