Scorecard: West Valley golf in Phoenix: the Wigwam, Verrado, Quintero and the drive out

West Valley golf in Phoenix means the Wigwam's 54 holes in Litchfield Park, Palm Valley in Goodyear, the two Verrado courses in Buckeye and Quintero in the hills near Lake Pleasant, plus active-adult courses in Sun City West and Peoria. It sits 39 to 73 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale, so it works best as a base of its own.

This guide covers each West Valley course that visitors can book, the private clubs, the overseed dates in the files, and when the long drive west is worth it. Fees were seen in 2026 and change by date.

The Wigwam: Gold, Blue and Red

The Wigwam is a historic resort in Litchfield Park with three 18-hole courses on site, restored by Richardson & Danner in the 2000s. It is the most golf per room in the Valley, but 35 to 45 minutes from the Scottsdale courses.

  • Gold: Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s long, tree-lined parkland course with big greens and bunkers, 7,430 yards from the Monster tees. A listing cites Golf Digest 2025/26 ranking it 44th in Arizona. It was overseeded October 7-27, 2026, and reopened October 28 with about three weeks of cart path only. See the Wigwam Gold course guide.
  • Blue: short and tight, par 70, under 6,400 yards from the back, with water and trees. Many listings still call it Patriot. 2026 GolfPass reviewers mentioned some holes under construction or maintenance.
  • Red: open and friendly with water, the easiest of the three by slope (forward tees from 5,578 yards). Older directories call it Heritage. A September 2026 review mentioned overseeding; exact dates were not found.

The resort fee was $46.65 a night on an October 2026 tracker; room rates were not captured. Stay here if you want 54 holes without driving or a West Valley spring training trip. Compare it with the other big resorts in our Scottsdale golf resorts guide.

Verrado, Palm Valley and Goodyear

Verrado Founders, by John Fought and Tom Lehman (2004), is a desert course on the slopes of the White Tank Mountains in Buckeye with views back across the Valley. Nine sets of tees run from 5,142 to 7,258 yards, so it suits mixed groups. A reviewer noted the rough is not overseeded, so expect dormant bermuda off the fairways in winter. See the Verrado Founders course guide.

Verrado Victory, higher in the foothills, shares the club's public tee-time page. A course listing gave 2026 overseed dates of September 15-17 and September 21 to October 9.

Palm Valley is an Arcis daily-fee club with 27 holes. Arcis Players' Card holders get preferred rates and earlier tee-time access. It is useful from a Goodyear base rather than a reason to drive from Scottsdale.

Quintero: the long drive worth making

Quintero is a Rees Jones course from 2000 in the high desert off Carefree Highway (SR-74), with big elevation changes, canyon carries and no homes along most holes. It opened as a private club and now sells public tee times; Troon lists it as semi-private. The club rate table read November 3, 2026:

Time Pay now online Pay later AZ licence, now AZ licence, later
Before 8 am$162$171$144$153
9 am peak$188$199$167$178

Each player needs an Arizona driver's licence for the resident rate, so most snowbirds pay the public price. Paying online saves about $9 to $11. Twilight is offered but not priced on the table. A directory in August 2025 gave a range of $100 in low season to $369 in high season, including cart and range balls. Book up to 90 days ahead online. At 73 minutes from Old Town, plan it as a dedicated half-day or play it from a north Phoenix or Peoria base. See the Quintero course guide.

Peoria, Sun City and Surprise: active-adult golf

  • Trilogy at Vistancia (Peoria), a Gary Panks par 72, "welcomes public play." Public tee times open 12 days ahead online, by app or at the golf shop (623-328-5100); Vistancia residents get 10% off and Trilogy residents 20%. Groups over eight email the shop. Its posted fall closure was October 4-22, year not printed.
  • Sun City West: seven Recreation Centers courses, four regulation (Deer Valley, Grandview, Pebblebrook, Trail Ridge) and three executive (Desert Trails, Echo Mesa, Stardust). The public books up to four days ahead by phone or in person. Inexpensive golf if you rent in the northwest Valley, though public fees were not published.
  • Sun City: several resident courses run by the Recreation Centers of Sun City; guest and public rules were not read, so call first.
  • Granite Falls (North and South) in Sun City Grand: primarily for residents; guest access not verified.

Status unclear, call first: Westbrook Village (Lakes and Vistas) in Peoria and the PebbleCreek courses in Goodyear.

Private West Valley clubs

  • The Clubs at Arrowhead King and Legend in Glendale: merged by Arcis in February 2025 into one private club. The Legend was a daily-fee Arnold Palmer course from 1986, so older directories still show it as public.
  • Blackstone in Vistancia, Peoria: members and their guests.

Spring training and the West Valley

Five of the ten Cactus League ballparks are out west: Camelback Ranch in Glendale (Dodgers, White Sox), American Family Fields of Phoenix (Brewers), Peoria Sports Complex (Padres, Mariners), Goodyear Ballpark (Guardians, Reds) and Surprise Stadium (Rangers, Royals). Games open on February 19, 2027, and run to about March 20-23. A morning round at the Wigwam or Palm Valley and an afternoon game in Goodyear makes an easy day. See Scottsdale golf and spring training.

Further out, Los Caballeros at a Wickenburg guest ranch sells public tee times at 104 minutes from Old Town, a round for an overnight rather than a day trip. The Grand Canyon University course in west Phoenix takes the Phoenix Golf Card. Heading on to Yuma? See our Phoenix to Yuma drive guide, or south via Phoenix to Tucson golf.
