Slope ladder: Canadian snowbirds in Naples: flights, the drive down I-75 and US stay limits

Canadian snowbirds in Naples and Fort Myers usually fly from Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa to RSW, or drive about 2,400 to 2,650 km down I-75 and I-95. Once here, three clocks matter: the US stay limit of six months less a day, the IRS day count for tax residency, and your province's health-coverage rules. Naples is on the same time as Ontario and Quebec.

This guide gathers what our research files say about flights, the drive, the stay rules and the golf a Canadian snowbird can play. The rules section is general information from the sources in our files, carried over from our Palm Springs research and not re-checked for Florida; it is not tax or legal advice, so confirm with the CBSA, CBP, the IRS and your province before you go.

Flights to Fort Myers from Canada

RSW is the airport for the whole area: one terminal and a record 11,154,458 passengers in 2025. Per the airline table we read on November 3, 2026, the Canadian carriers are Air Canada (seasonal from Montreal-Trudeau), Air Canada Rouge (Toronto-Pearson), Porter (Toronto-Pearson, plus seasonal Montreal-Trudeau and Ottawa) and WestJet (Toronto-Pearson). Air Transat, Sunwing and Flair were not listed for RSW, though Air Transat has flown Montreal-RSW in past seasons. Winter 2026-27 frequencies and start dates were not confirmed because the airport's nonstop page was blocked.

Drive times are free-flow routing estimates from November 2026, which tend to run long; real driving is usually a little shorter.

Other airports. Punta Gorda (PGD), 82 minutes from downtown Naples, has Allegiant and seasonal Sun Country only, with no Canadian airline; its Niagara Falls, New York, service is the closest option for southern Ontario drivers willing to cross the border to fly. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) has extensive low-cost and Canadian service (routes not verified for this guide) and sits about 2 hours 6 minutes from Naples via the tolled Alligator Alley, which has no services for long stretches. Tampa (TPA) is about 3 hours 15 minutes away. More in flights to Fort Myers RSW.

Driving from Ontario and Quebec

Ontario drivers usually cross at Windsor-Detroit or Sarnia-Port Huron and take I-75, which runs from Michigan almost to the door in Naples. Quebec and eastern Ontario drivers usually come down I-87 and I-81 to I-95, or I-77 and I-26, and join I-75 or I-4 in Florida. Snow in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee on I-75, or in the Appalachians, can slow December and January trips.

Driving down matters for the paperwork. If you enter at a land crossing and do not receive an I-94 record, and you will stay 30 days or more, the USCIS registration rule below applies to you. Having your own car also matters here: the courses are spread over an hour of I-75 from Naples to Cape Coral.

US stay limits for Canadian snowbirds

Immigration. Canadian citizens visiting as tourists are normally admitted for up to six months. The Canadian Snowbird Association states the limit as six months less a day, 182 days, in a 12-month period, and CBP decides at the border. A short trip home of under 30 days may still be counted toward that total. Bills to extend the limit to 240 days have been introduced in Congress but not passed.

Registration. Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record must register with USCIS (Form G-325R). US land-entry data is shared with the CBSA, so Canadian authorities can see departure dates. Fall 2026 news coverage (BNN Bloomberg and CTV, October 2, 2026) said snowbirds heading south should expect extra US scrutiny.

US tax. The "182-day rule" is shorthand for two different limits. The IRS substantial presence test counts all your days in the current year, plus one-third of last year's days and one-sixth of the year before. Reaching 183 weighted days, with at least 31 days this year, makes you a US tax resident unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840, due by June 15 for most snowbirds. Spending no more than about 120 days a year in the US every year keeps you under 183 weighted days.

Health coverage. Each province sets its own limit on time away. Ontario and Quebec both allow extended winter absences under conditions, so check your province's current rule. Separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential, especially in Florida, where hospital costs are high.

Time zones and the calendar

Naples and Fort Myers are on Eastern time with daylight saving (EST from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027), the same clock as Ontario and Quebec all year. Manitoba is one hour behind. Alberta and Saskatchewan stay on UTC-6, one hour behind in winter and two in summer, and British Columbia stays on UTC-7. Canadian March break, in late February and March (2027 dates not verified), lands on top of US spring breaks, spring training and peak snowbird season, so book golf and rooms early for those weeks.

Golf for Canadian snowbirds

Most courses here are private, so a Canadian winter is built on public courses and passes, or on a rental inside a golf community. Close to RSW, the city's two courses are the value play: Fort Myers Country Club, a 1917 Donald Ross design, and Eastwood, both $70 with cart before noon and $35 after 3 pm in November 2026, tax included. In Estero, Stoneybrook is the tougher public test. In Cape Coral, Coral Oaks sells a 9-Month Play Pass for $1,200 that skips January to March, which suits snowbirds who arrive in the fall and stay into May. See the Fort Myers Country Club course guide and the Coral Oaks course guide.

On the Naples side, Lely Resort's Flamingo Island and ArrowHead take public tee times, and Hibiscus stays public until spring 2027. More in golf passes in Naples and Fort Myers and Naples winter golf for snowbirds.

Where Canadian snowbirds stay

For a season, most snowbirds rent a condo or home by the month or take an RV site. Rentals of six months or less are treated as transient stays in Florida and carry sales and tourist tax, and many associations set 30-day to 3-month minimums. Florida has no state personal income tax, which matters only if you become a US tax resident. See Naples snowbird rentals, Naples RV resorts and where to stay in Naples for golf.

November is a good month to arrive: about 81F by day, dry, and early-season golf rates before January. The best time to golf in Naples has the full calendar. Wintering in the desert instead? Read Canadian snowbirds in Palm Springs.

Questions golfers ask

Which Canadian airlines fly to Fort Myers (RSW)?

Per the airline table we read in November 2026: Air Canada Rouge, Porter and WestJet from Toronto-Pearson, plus seasonal Air Canada and Porter flights from Montreal-Trudeau and seasonal Porter from Ottawa. Air Transat, Sunwing and Flair were not listed for RSW. Winter 2026-27 frequencies were not confirmed.

How long is the drive from Toronto to Naples?

About 2,397 km and roughly 28 hours of driving by free-flow routing, which tends to run long. Ottawa is about 2,602 km and Montreal about 2,651 km. Fort Myers is about 65 km and 40 minutes closer than Naples.

How long can a Canadian snowbird stay in Florida?

Canadian tourists are normally admitted for up to six months, and the Canadian Snowbird Association states the limit as six months less a day (182 days) in a 12-month period. US border officers decide at entry, and a short trip home of under 30 days may still count toward the total.

Do Canadian snowbirds need to register with the US government?

Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record must register with USCIS using Form G-325R. That covers most snowbirds who drive in at a land crossing, as many Ontario and Quebec snowbirds do on I-75.

What is the substantial presence test for snowbirds?

The IRS counts all your US days this year, one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before. Reaching 183 weighted days (with at least 31 this year) makes you a US tax resident unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840, due by June 15 for most snowbirds. This is general information, not tax advice.

Is Naples on the same time zone as Toronto and Montreal?

Yes. Collier and Lee counties are on Eastern time with daylight saving, the same clock as Ontario and Quebec all year. Manitoba is one hour behind, and Alberta, which stays on UTC-6 year-round since June 2026, is one hour behind in winter.

Do I need travel medical insurance for a Florida winter?

Yes. Each province sets its own limit on time away and its own coverage rules, and separate out-of-country medical insurance is essential, especially in Florida where hospital costs are high. Check your province's current rule before you leave.
