Course stamp: Man O' War golf in Myrtle Beach, The Wizard next door, and what happened to The Witch

Man O' War golf in Myrtle Beach means one of the Strand's water courses: a 1996 Dan Maples design built around a 100-acre lake, with back-to-back island greens and an island fairway. The Wizard, the easier Maples course next door, is the usual second round. The third course in the group, The Witch, closed in 2021.

Here is how the two open courses compare, what they cost when we checked, and what to play if you came looking for The Witch.

Quick facts

  • Courses: Man O' War and The Wizard, both public daily-fee, on Leeshire Blvd in Myrtle Beach.
  • Group: both are part of the Mystical Golf group. The Witch, the third, is closed.
  • Designer: Dan Maples with Michael Gleason, both opened 1996.
  • Back tees: Man O' War 6,967 yards (73.2/141); The Wizard 6,721 yards (72.0/125).
  • Fees seen: Man O' War $137 (package-operator rate, October 16, 2026); The Wizard about $93 (package-operator listing, date not shown).
  • Greens: bentgrass on both, per GolfPass.
  • Drive: about 33 minutes and 11.3 miles from the SkyWheel.

Both fees are package-operator rates per round, seen November 1, 2026. Neither course publishes a seasonal rack-rate card in our files, so check the live tee sheet for your dates.

The card data has some loose ends. myrtlebeachgolf.com lists Man O' War at par 71 while GolfPass says 72, and Hole19 shows 73.4/151 from the tips. For The Wizard, myrtlebeachgolf.com shows 72.8/128 from the back, against GolfPass's 72.0/125. Confirm on the first tee.

Man O' War: the water course

Man O' War is built around a 100-acre lake, and water comes into play on nearly every hole. The back nine has back-to-back island greens, and there is an island-fairway par 4 as well.

That makes it a fun, photogenic round for a group of decent ball-strikers and a long day for anyone who cannot carry water. The Regular tees at 6,402 yards (130 slope) are the sensible choice for most groups.

What reviewers said in 2026:

  • An August 2026 reviewer called the greens "unbelievable."
  • Reviewers in 2026 say the clubhouse needs work but the course itself is well kept.

See the Man O' War course guide for the hole map.

How to book Man O' War and The Wizard

Both courses are public, so anyone can book. Man O' War sells times on the myrtlebeachgolf.com live tee sheet, and both courses are sold by Grand Strand package operators. Neither course publishes an advance booking window in our files, and no course phone number or website was captured, so use the tee sheet or a package operator.

For a spring or fall weekend, book as soon as your dates are set. If you want both courses in one day, book the Man O' War morning time first and fit The Wizard around it. Our Myrtle Beach tee times guide explains how booking windows and package deposits work across the Strand.

The Wizard: the easier second round

The Wizard is a links-and-mounds course with water, built-up mounding and a castle-themed clubhouse. At 125 slope from the back, it is the kinder of the two by a wide margin, and the Senior tees drop to a 108 slope.

Our take is that The Wizard is fine as a second round at the same complex, but less memorable than Man O' War. 2026 reviews were mixed: one in August said the course was "in great shape," while others in May complained about tee boxes and price.

If your group wants 36 holes in a day without moving the car far, Man O' War in the morning and The Wizard after lunch is the obvious pairing. See the Wizard course guide.

What happened to The Witch?

The Witch Golf Links was the third Mystical Golf course, a 1989 Dan Maples design on SC 544 near Conway. Owner Claude Pardue sold it, citing flooding, and it played its last day on November 21, 2021. GolfPass reported in October 2021 that the land was slated for homebuilders.

It is not on our map and cannot be booked. If an old package listing or directory still shows it, ignore it. Our list of closed golf courses in Myrtle Beach covers The Witch and the other courses that have gone.

If you wanted The Witch: what to play instead

The Witch was an inland course off SC 544. Good replacements are the other inland courses on the 501 and 544 corridors:

  • Man O' War and The Wizard: same designer, same group, and still open.
  • Wild Wing Avocet: about 22 minutes from the SkyWheel, a Larry Nelson and Jeff Brauer course with a new clubhouse for fall 2026. A package operator listed $85 to $95 for November 2, 2026.
  • Legends Parkland: about 24 minutes, the most playable full-length course at Legends. Our Legends golf guide compares all three.
  • Legends Heathland: Tom Doak's open, links-style course at the same resort.
  • King's North: about 19 minutes, the renovated Palmer course with its own island-fairway par 5, The Gambler. See Myrtle Beach National golf.

The Carolina Forest golf guide covers the rest of the inland courses.

Where to stay for Man O' War

Man O' War and The Wizard are inland, so no beach hotel is close. By our router estimates:

For a group, the Legends villas make the most sense if you are also playing Legends. Otherwise, a central Myrtle Beach base near Broadway at the Beach works for this pair and the 501 courses. Compare bases in where to stay in Myrtle Beach for golf.

When to play Man O' War

Bentgrass greens do not depend on overseeding, which helps a winter round. Both courses were on a 2024 list of wall-to-wall overseeded courses, but that was not confirmed for 2026. Before a December to February trip, ask whether the fairways are overseeded or dormant. Our Myrtle Beach winter golf conditions guide explains the difference.

Is Man O' War worth it?

For most buddies groups, yes, once. Man O' War golf in Myrtle Beach is the Strand's all-water round. At $137 for a mid-October date, it sat inside King's North's $136 to $160 package-operator range for November 1, 2026. Pair it with The Wizard if you want a cheaper second round on the same road, and skip the back tees unless everyone in the group can carry water reliably.

Plan it on the map
