Shary Golf Course in Mission, TX is the city's 27-hole municipal course: flat, cheap and lit for night golf. An undated city rate sheet shows about $21 to walk 18 holes and $16 for 9, the last tee time is 11 PM, and an annual green-fee membership was listed at $900 in October 2026. Book by phone or walk in.
It is not a destination course, and the city does not pretend it is. It is the busy, practical round that Winter Texans in Mission and west McAllen play again and again, and it is lit for night golf, which is unusual anywhere. This guide covers the rates, the passes, the night golf and where Shary fits in a week.

Which deal suits a winter
The 20-round card at about $400 works out near $20 a round, which suits a visitor playing twice a week for ten weeks. If you will play most days for a full season, the annual green fee is the one to price: at $900 it pays off after about 43 rounds at the $21 walking rate. Carts are extra on both, so if you ride every time, add the cart cost or bring your own cart for the $11 trail fee. The city does not publish a separate Winter Texan rate in our research. For how Shary's passes compare with the others, see Rio Grande Valley golf passes.
Night golf: Starlight at Shary
The city lists daily hours of 7 AM to 1 AM, with the last tee time at 11 PM, and promotes night play as "Starlight at Shary." Late tee times are useful in the Valley in two ways:
- Winter mornings fill. Peak Winter Texan season runs roughly November to March, and morning tee times are hardest to get from January to mid-March. An evening round avoids the rush.
- Summer heat. NOAA normals at McAllen show highs of about 97F in June and 98.5F in July, with lows near 78-79F. Mornings never really cool off in summer, so an evening round after sunset is a sensible alternative to a dawn start, and summer is when the Valley's tee sheets are quietest.
The lit driving range is open 7 AM to midnight, so you can practise after dinner too. Our guide to the driving range in McAllen covers the other practice facilities.
The course
Shary is flat municipal parkland: 27 holes made up of the main 18 and a third nine numbered 19 to 27. Ratings and slopes are not published in our sources, and the designer and opening year are not recorded.
| Tee (main 18) | Yards | Par |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | 6,025 | 71 |
| White | 5,672 | 71 |
| Red | 4,893 | 71 |
At 6,025 yards from the back it is short, and with no hills it is an easy walk. There are about 70 electric carts if you would rather ride. The snack bar and pro shop are on site. The Shary course guide has the layout on the 3D map.
Booking Shary Golf Course
Booking Shary Golf Course in Mission TX is old-fashioned: there is no online tee sheet on the city page. Call the pro shop at 956-580-8770 or turn up. The booking window is not published. In winter, call a few days ahead for morning times, or plan an evening round when the sheet is quieter. The city calls Shary Mission's top tourist attraction in the winter months, so expect a Winter Texan crowd in season. Our Rio Grande Valley tee times guide covers the booking systems at the other courses.
Where to stay near Shary
Shary sits on the north side of Mission, about 13 minutes from downtown McAllen. Routed drive times from nearby stays:
| Stay | Type | Drive to Shary | Price seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampton Inn & Suites Mission | Hotel | 8 min | from $91 (Oct 28-29, 2026) |
| Bentsen Grove Resort | 55+ RV park | 8 min | 3 months $1,400 plus electric |

Hotel prices are Kayak samples, not quotes. Bentsen Grove's season packages were effective November 1, 2025; a 2026-27 card had not been posted as of October 2026. The Hampton offers a grab-and-go breakfast bag on weekdays for early tee times. For more, see where to stay in McAllen for golf.
Shary in a weekly rotation
Shary is the cheap, flexible round in a west-side week. Two nearby city courses give you variety:
- Champion Lakes in McAllen, the former Palm View, about 7 minutes from the Hampton. Its rate card (effective February 1, 2026) shows $33 for 18 plus $14 a player for a cart, with a $37 twilight rate with cart from 2 PM. It is home to about thirty Winter Texan leagues. See the Champion Lakes course guide.
- Tierra del Sol in Pharr, with $26 walking or $41 with a cart and a 3-month package at $800 for a round a day with cart. See the Tierra del Sol course guide.
A simple pattern: Shary twice a week on the card (one evening round), Champion Lakes once on twilight, Tierra del Sol once, and one day further afield. Our McAllen golf courses and municipal golf in the Rio Grande Valley guides compare the west-side options, and cheap golf in the Rio Grande Valley ranks the lowest fees.
Around Shary
Mission has two well-known nature stops close to the course. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, the World Birding Center headquarters, and the National Butterfly Center sit side by side off Military Rd; check the butterfly center's opening status before you go. For breakfast tacos, Ana Liz Taqueria is in downtown Mission at 215 N Conway Ave; expect a line at peak times.
The Texas Citrus Fiesta in Mission runs through January with a parade on the last Saturday. The 2027 schedule was not published as of October 2026. It makes Mission busy on parade day but has little effect on tee sheets. See where to eat in McAllen for more after-golf options.
