What changed at Champion Lakes Golf Course McAllen

The course has had a few changes, and the name is the one most visitors notice. It is still the City of McAllen's municipal course, but it now trades as Champion Lakes. The city's golf department page redirects to championlakesgolf.com, and the old palmviewgolf.com domain is parked, so older listings and bookmarks can mislead you.

The layout dates from a 1999 rebuild, designed by Charles Howard and built by SAJO Construction, which reopened in 2000. The course site says the clubhouse has been fully remodeled and new tees added more recently. In February 2026 the city announced a new short course co-designed by Lorena Ochoa on land directly west, at 2701-3501 S Ware Rd. No build dates were published, so do not plan around it yet.

The 2026 rate card

Item Price (effective Feb 1, 2026)
18 holes, walking$33.00
9 holes, walking$21.50
Extra nine$11.50
Cart, 18 holes (per person)$14.00
Cart, 9 holes (per person)$8.50
18 holes with cart$47.00
Twilight with cart, from 2 PM (3 PM daylight time)$37.00
Afternoon couples, with cart, from 4 PM (5:30 PM daylight time)$30.00
Afternoon family, with cart, same hours$25.00
20-round Smart Card$561.00
Private cart trail fee$8 a round or $550 a year

Cart prices include tax. Daylight saving ends November 1, 2026 and resumes March 14, 2027, so for nearly all of the winter season, twilight starts at 2 PM and the couples rate at 4 PM.

The Smart Card is 20 rounds for $561, 15% off the daily rate: about $28 a round before the cart. It expires 18 months after purchase, which suits a Winter Texan who comes back the next season.

The couples rate is the standout deal. Two players with a cart for $30 is about the cheapest golf in the Valley, though a 4 PM start in December leaves limited daylight.

No senior or Winter Texan rate appears on the card. Membership and league pages exist on the course site, but we did not read their prices. A past city report said new annual memberships were capped with a waiting list, while non-members keep access.

What a winter at Champion Lakes costs

For a Winter Texan playing Champion Lakes Golf Course McAllen regularly, the Smart Card does most of the work. A worked example from the 2026 card, for one golfer playing three times a week for 12 weeks (36 rounds):

Approach Green fees Carts Total
Daily rate, riding36 x $33 = $1,18836 x $14 = $504$1,692
Two Smart Cards (40 rounds), riding$1,122$504$1,626
Two Smart Cards, own cart$1,12236 x $8 trail fee = $288$1,410
Twilight every roundIncludedIncluded36 x $37 = $1,332

The Smart Cards leave four rounds spare for the next season, inside the 18-month expiry. Playing twilight every time is cheapest on paper, but in winter the 2 PM start gives a tight finish before dusk. Mixing morning league rounds on the Smart Card with a weekly twilight or couples round is the realistic plan.

How to book

Book on the course site at championlakesgolf.com, which runs on the city's Club Prophet tee sheet, or call the pro shop. The booking window is not published, so ask how far ahead you can reserve, especially for January to mid-March. Our Rio Grande Valley tee times guide covers booking habits across the Valley.

Getting a tee time in Winter Texan season

About thirty Winter Texan leagues call Champion Lakes home, so winter mornings fill first. Three ways around it:

  1. Play twilight. From 2 PM in winter, $37 with a cart, and the sheet is usually freer.
  2. Go midweek and book early. Call as soon as the window opens.
  3. Use Shary instead. Shary in Mission, 10 minutes from the convention-center hotels, has night golf with an 11 PM last tee time.

If you are staying the winter, joining a league is how most regulars get steady morning times. See Rio Grande Valley golf leagues.

The course

Champion Lakes is a flat municipal 18 with lakes, par 72. The course site lists two sets of tees:

Tee Yards Par
Back6,74872
Middle5,78872

Directories give the back tees as 6,771-6,783 yards, and ratings and slopes were not published in our sources. It is solid and central rather than special. The Champion Lakes course guide has the hole layout and elevation.

The clubhouse is open 364 days a year, 6:30 AM to dusk, closed on Christmas Day. The lit range runs 7 AM to 10 PM, from 11 AM on Mondays, which makes it one of the better evening practice spots in McAllen. See driving ranges in McAllen.

The course also hosts events. The McAllen Amateur was played there in late June 2026, and the site lists a 2027 Drive, Chip and Putt qualifier. Expect those dates to tie up the course.
