Closed golf courses in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley include Desert Dunes (January 2025), Mesquite (2022), Rancho Mirage Country Club (2015), the Borrego Springs Resort course (2019) and Palm Springs Country Club (2007). Each has an open course nearby: Escena and Mission Lakes for the north side, Tahquitz Creek and Indian Canyons in town.
Some booking sites and directories still list these courses, which is how golfers end up driving to a locked gate. This guide to closed golf courses in Palm Springs and the valley lists what has closed, what is unclear, and what to play instead, with dates and sources.

Desert Dunes
Desert Dunes was a public Robert Trent Jones Jr. links-style course in Desert Hot Springs. Golf Digest reported on January 4, 2025, and NBC Palm Springs on January 6, 2025, that the course had announced its permanent closure on its own website, citing operational struggles. NBC reported the land would become a nature preserve. Some booking sites still list it, so ignore any tee time you see for it.
Play instead: Mission Lakes, an older Ted Robinson course in Desert Hot Springs that takes public play, is 21 minutes from downtown Palm Springs. It showed a $34 hot deal with cart for August 8, 2026, but no online tee times for November 3, 2026, possibly because of overseed. Escena, a Nicklaus Design course on the north side of Palm Springs, is 10 minutes from downtown and the closest full-length public alternative to the old Desert Dunes crowd.
Mesquite Golf & Country Club
Mesquite was a public Bert Stamps course from 1985 inside a Palm Springs condo community. GolfPass marks it closed for business and says it closed in 2022, with the last reviewed round played June 2, 2022. A 2026 rental listing says golf is discontinued, but the community keeps its pool, spa and tennis. If you rent there, you will be driving to golf.
Play instead: Tahquitz Creek Resort, 8 minutes from downtown, showed $63.99 to $65.99 plus a $3.49 fee for November 7-8, 2026. Indian Canyons North, a 1961 Bell layout 7 minutes from downtown, reopened from overseed October 30, 2026 and posted $130, or $110 twilight, in October 2026.
Palm Springs Country Club
Palm Springs Country Club, off North Whitewater Club Drive in north Palm Springs, closed in 2007. KESQ reported that the city changed the land use from open space to residential for the Serena Park project, 386 units on 126 acres, and The Palm Springs Post described the site as abandoned for more than a decade. Whether Serena Park homes have been built was not confirmed.
Play instead: Escena, on the same north side of town.
Rancho Mirage Country Club
Rancho Mirage Country Club was an 18-hole course inside a gated HOA community. It was sold in early 2015 to Oasis Ranch LLC and closed in June 2015. A settlement approved November 10, 2017 gave about 80 acres to the HOA, left about 25 acres with the developer for a hotel, spa and homes, and required the developer to build a short 18-hole course in phase one, expected to be at least par 3 and likely open to the public. No source found shows that course has opened, and one directory still listing an 18 at the address is treated as stale.
Play instead: Mission Hills - Gary Player, a public, independent course in Rancho Mirage 17 minutes from downtown, ran $49.48 to $53.99 in August and September 2026 and planned to reopen from overseed in November.
Borrego Springs Resort and Club Circle
The 27-hole Borrego Springs Resort course closed in September 2019, with an announcement on September 20, 2019 citing finances. GolfPass and Foretee list it closed in 2019, and no reopening was found as of November 2026. The closure also affected the 9-hole Club Circle executive course, which could not be shown as operating since.
Play instead: Rams Hill, 125 minutes and 90.3 miles from downtown Palm Springs, is open year-round after its 2024 TifTuf conversion, from $170 Monday to Thursday in October and November 2026. Our Borrego Springs golf guide covers the town's remaining courses and the drive.
Emerald Desert's nine holes
Emerald Desert Golf & RV Resort in Palm Desert had a 9-hole course from 1987. Foretee lists it closed in 2007, and the resort's current golf pages list no on-site course. The Emerald Desert RV Resort still operates, and third-party listings say it has preferred rates at nearby courses, naming Desert Springs and the Classic Club. See Palm Springs RV resorts.
Status unclear, call first
These courses could not be confirmed as operating in 2026 and are not on our map:
- Ivey Ranch Country Club, Thousand Palms: 9 holes in an HOA community; the latest Greenskeeper review was December 17, 2024 and the course website no longer resolves.
- The New Vineyards Golf Course, Coachella: 9 holes beside a motor coach resort; listings exist but no 2026 tee times or official page.
- Calimesa Country Club: GolfPass says it closed for business in October 2017, and a planning filing describes senior housing, a hotel and retail on about 30 acres. Some directories still list it.
- Road Runner Golf & Country Club, Borrego Springs: an 18-hole par-3 course; listed as operating, but no club website or 2026 notice was found. Call (760) 767-5374.
- Santa Rosa Country Club, Palm Desert: one directory lists it closed in 2015, another still lists it.
- Ironwood South, Palm Desert: private; an undated report says it is being renovated, with no reopening date.
- RV and community courses: the Outdoor Resort Indio and Outdoor Resort Palm Springs courses, and courses at Canyon Country Club, Canyon Estates, Hidden Springs, Desert Crest and Caliente Springs. Access and status were not verified.

Temporary closures are not closures
Nearly every Coachella Valley course overseeds its bermuda with rye and closes for a few weeks each fall. A few 2026 examples:

Two more to watch: the Omni Rancho Las Palmas course announced a $12 million renovation for February to October 2026, but reviews show it stayed open through 2026 and one listing says the work moved to March to December 1, 2027. The Westin's Pete Dye Resort Course closed May 1 to August 27, 2026 for greens work and reopens from overseed November 3. No. Its golf operations closed in September 2019, citing finances, and a 2020 letter in the Borrego Sun said the grounds were unmaintained. No reopening was found as of November 2026. Rams Hill, the Springs at Borrego and de Anza are the Borrego Springs options.
Which Palm Springs area courses have an unclear status?
Ivey Ranch in Thousand Palms, the New Vineyards course in Coachella, Calimesa Country Club, Club Circle and Road Runner in Borrego Springs, and several small community courses could not be confirmed for 2026. Treat them as status unclear and call first.
Are courses closed in the fall in Palm Springs?
Many close for a few weeks for overseed, which is not the same as closing for good. In 2026, for example, the PGA West Stadium Course closed October 12 and reopens November 9, and Desert Willow Firecliff closes November 9 to December 25. Check each course before booking an autumn round.
