Drive lines from downtown Palm Springs: Borrego Springs golf: Rams Hill, de Anza, the Springs and the drive from Palm Springs

Borrego Springs golf means one main reason to make the drive: Rams Hill, a Fazio-rebuilt public desert course about 125 minutes from downtown Palm Springs, ranked by GOLF and open year-round with no fall overseed closure. De Anza Country Club takes visitor tee times, and the Springs at Borrego has a 9-hole RV resort course.

Borrego Springs sits off our main map, south of the Coachella Valley across the Salton Sea basin. This guide covers the three courses, what they cost, what has closed in town, and how the drive works. Rates were seen on November 2, 2026 and change by date and demand.

Rams Hill

Rams Hill opened in 1983 as a Ted Robinson Sr. design, was rebuilt by Tom Fazio with Dennis Wise in 2007, and had more work by Jackson Kahn Design in 2013. It is a desert course in the Anza-Borrego basin with wide fairways framed by desert and mountains, and few homes. GOLF ranked it number 93 on its 2024-25 Top 100 Courses You Can Play.

The turf story matters for planning. The greens went to MiniVerde bermuda in 2023, and in 2024 the course replaced its yearly rye overseed with TifTuf bermuda on tees, fairways, roughs and surrounds. The result is no fall overseed closure: Rams Hill has been open year-round since October 2024. In mid-winter, expect dormant tan bermuda rather than the green rye you see in the valley. A reviewer noted greens were aerified without notice in mid-August 2026.

Rams Hill rates by month

Season Mon-Thu from Fri-Sun from
October-November 2026$170$225

January 2027$150$205
February 2027$155$205

These are starting prices from the club's rate page, read November 2, 2026; they rise as tee sheets fill. GolfPass hot deals for November 3-8, 2026 ran about $139.99 to $239.99 plus a $3.49 fee. Two patterns stand out: Monday to Thursday is $50 to $55 cheaper than the weekend in every season, and December to February is the cheapest window. A cart is included, per one listing. Twilight and summer rates were not published.

Rams Hill is priced in the same band as the PGA West tour courses and plays slightly easier from the back tees. The difference is the drive and the quiet: few homes, desert on every side. Our PGA West golf guide covers the valley's equivalent.

A Borrego Springs golf day

Book a Monday to Thursday morning tee time on the Rams Hill site up to 30 days out, and leave the east end of the valley about two hours before it. An October 2026 reviewer praised the practice facility and the tacos at the turn, so there is a reason to arrive early and no need to pack lunch. After the round, the drive back is the same two hours, so a 36-hole day is only realistic if you stay the night, which is where a Stay & Play package comes in.

de Anza Country Club

De Anza is Borrego's older member club, at the north end of town. Its website runs a separate visitor tee sheet, it sells trial and Discovery memberships, and a 2018 Borrego Sun report said outside play would continue. Visitor fees, rules and 2026 overseed dates are not published, so call (760) 767-5105 before you go. Google reviewers rate it 4.8 from 76 reviews.

The Springs at Borrego

The Springs at Borrego RV Resort has a 9-hole course bookable on Chronogolf, with Chronogolf averages of about $31 weekday and $39 weekend for nine holes (undated). On November 2, 2026 the course was closed for its annual overseed, with no reopening date given. Carts for 18 holes are not available after noon, and 9-hole carts not after 2 pm. It is mainly useful for snowbirds parked at the resort, not as a reason to make the drive.

What has closed in Borrego Springs

  • Borrego Springs Resort & Country Club: the 27-hole course closed in September 2019, citing finances. A 2020 letter in the Borrego Sun said the grounds were unmaintained, and no reopening was found as of November 2026.
  • Club Circle: a 9-hole executive course affected by the same 2019 closure, with no operating evidence since. Status unclear.
  • Road Runner Golf & Country Club: an 18-hole par-3 course in a 55+ community, listed as operating by directories, but no club website or 2026 notice was found. Status unclear, call first at (760) 767-5374.

The drive from Palm Springs and La Quinta

From downtown Palm Springs, Rams Hill is about 125 minutes and 90.3 miles. From La Quinta it is about 105 to 110 minutes and 73 miles: south on the Highway 86 Expressway toward Salton City, west on S-22 (the Borrego Salton Seaway) into Borrego Springs, then south to Rams Hill at the far end of town. These are free-flow router estimates without traffic.

That makes the east end of the valley the better launch point. A group based at La Quinta Resort or in La Quinta saves about 15 to 20 minutes each way over one based in Palm Springs. Read La Quinta golf courses and where to stay in Palm Springs for golf for bases.

When Borrego Springs golf makes sense

  • October: the strongest case. Many valley courses are closed or on temporary greens for overseed. In 2026, for example, the PGA West Stadium Course was closed from October 12 to November 9, while Rams Hill stayed open. See Palm Springs golf overseed and Palm Springs golf in October and November.
  • December to February: Rams Hill's cheapest rates, but dormant bermuda fairways.
  • March to May: back to $170 and $220 starting prices, alongside the valley's busiest weeks.

For a snowbird on a two to four month stay, one Rams Hill day per winter is a sensible change from the valley rotation. For a buddies trip of three to five days, it costs half a day in the car, so most groups are better off with a second valley round such as the Pete Dye Dunes course at La Quinta Resort.
