Canadian snowbirds in Orlando can fly nonstop from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and several seasonal cities into Orlando International, or drive about 2,000 to 2,300 km down I-75 or I-95. Plan around three clocks: US immigration (usually up to six months), the IRS substantial presence test (Form 8840) and your province's health rules. Long-stayers who drive in must also register with USCIS.
This guide covers the flights, the drive south, the stay limits as our research states them, and where Canadians base for a golf winter. The rules here are general information gathered in November 2026, not tax or legal advice; check them with the official sources and your own advisers before you set dates.

Flights for Canadian snowbirds to Orlando
Orlando International (MCO) is the main airport, 28 minutes from downtown and 29 from Disney Springs, free-flow. Canadian carriers on its airline table (read November 4, 2026):
| Airline | From | Seasonal |
|---|---|---|
| Air Canada | Toronto-Pearson | |
| Air Canada Rouge | Montreal-Trudeau, Toronto-Pearson | Halifax, Ottawa, Quebec City |
| WestJet | Calgary, Toronto-Pearson | Edmonton, Winnipeg |
| Porter | Ottawa, Toronto-Pearson | Halifax, Hamilton, London ON (from Nov 19, 2026) |
| Flair | Toronto-Pearson |
Air Transat appears in the table's busiest international routes on Montreal but not in its airline list. Winter 2026-27 frequencies and season dates were not confirmed with the airlines. Terminal C handles international flights by non-US airlines.
Orlando Sanford (SFB) had no current Canadian service on the table read; Flair's 2021 routes there are no longer listed. Tampa (TPA) has its own Canadian service, but routes were not checked; it is about 111 minutes from downtown Orlando and 96 from Disney Springs, free-flow. Our flights to Orlando for golf guide compares the airports.
Driving down from Ontario and Quebec
Free-flow OSRM drive times to downtown Orlando, which tend to run long:
| From | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | 2,052 km | About 24.1 hours |
| Ottawa | 2,257 km | About 26.9 hours |
| Montreal | 2,306 km | About 27.5 hours |
| Detroit | 1,844 km | About 21.4 hours |
From Ontario, most drivers cross at Windsor-Detroit or Sarnia-Port Huron and take I-75 south through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. Stay on I-75 to Wildwood and take Florida's Turnpike south-east into Orlando, or leave I-75 for local roads to Clermont and the Lake County towns.
From Quebec and eastern Ontario, the usual route is I-87 and I-81 or I-95 down the east coast to Daytona Beach, then I-4 west, which brings you in past Sanford and Lake Mary. I-95 to the SR 528 Beachline is the way to the airport and Lake Nona.
Winter driving. Snow on I-75 in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee or on I-81 in Virginia can slow December and January trips. The Auto Train from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford is an option for east-coast drivers who want their car; schedules and fares were not verified.
Tolls. Florida's Turnpike, SR 408, SR 417, SR 429 and SR 528 are mostly cashless, with SunPass, E-PASS or toll-by-plate. If you rent a car, its toll program adds daily fees.
These routes are general guidance, not checked against a route planner.
Stay limits: the three clocks
Canadian snowbirds deal with three separate limits, and the "182-day rule" is shorthand for two of them.
1. US immigration. Canadian citizens visiting as tourists are normally admitted for up to six months. The Canadian Snowbird Association puts the limit at "six months less a day" (182 days) in a 12-month period. Border officers decide at entry, and a short trip home of under 30 days may still count toward the total. Bills to extend the limit to 240 days have been introduced in Congress but not passed.
2. US tax. The IRS substantial presence test adds all your days this year, one-third of last year's days and one-sixth of the year before. At 183 weighted days or more (with at least 31 this year) you are a US tax resident, unless you qualify for the closer connection exception by filing Form 8840, due by June 15 for most snowbirds. Staying no more than about 120 days a year, every year, keeps you under.
A worked example: a steady winter from November 1 to April 15 puts about 166 days into each calendar year (61 in November and December, 105 from January 1 to April 15). Weighted, that is 166 plus 55 plus 28, about 249 days, well over 183. That snowbird would need Form 8840 every year.
3. Provincial health coverage. Each province sets its own limit on time away; check yours. Buy separate out-of-country medical insurance; US hospital costs are high.
Registration. Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over who stay 30 days or more and did not receive an I-94 record must register with USCIS on Form G-325R. That catches most Ontario and Quebec snowbirds who drive in at a land crossing. US land-entry data is shared with the CBSA, and fall 2026 news coverage (BNN Bloomberg, October 2, 2026) said snowbirds should expect extra scrutiny at the border.
Where Canadian snowbirds base
Vacation homes around Kissimmee, Davenport, ChampionsGate and Reunion are the classic base, with condos and homes in Clermont, Winter Garden and the Lake County towns, and RV resorts in Kissimmee, St. Cloud and Clermont. Canadian families add to demand for Kissimmee and Davenport vacation homes around March break (2027 Ontario and Quebec dates not verified), on top of US spring breaks and Easter (March 28, 2027). Drivers coming down I-75 and the Turnpike often find Clermont and Lake County the easiest arrival. See Orlando snowbird rentals and Orlando RV resorts.
Golf for a Canadian winter
Season passes are the value play. Royal St. Cloud Golf Links charges everyone the same rate and sells a $1,575 annual membership or $135 a month for 12 months; see the Royal St. Cloud course guide. Casselberry Golf Club sells a $399 monthly unlimited pass, and Winter Park Pines a $1,650 non-resident annual pass; see the Winter Park Pines course guide.
For daily-fee rounds near the vacation-home belt, Providence charged $99 before 2 pm in November and December 2026, and Highlands Reserve sits inside a Davenport rental community. On the west side, Clermont National showed GolfNow times from $69.99 for November 5, 2026. Note that Florida-resident discounts, such as Disney's 25% off, need proof of Florida residency.

About 2,052 km and 24 hours of driving by the OSRM router, which tends to run long; Montreal is about 2,306 km and Ottawa 2,257 km. Most Ontario drivers cross at Windsor-Detroit or Sarnia-Port Huron and take I-75 south.

Do Canadian snowbirds need to file Form 8840?
Often, yes. The IRS substantial presence test counts this year's days, a third of last year's and a sixth of the year before; 183 or more weighted days makes you a US tax resident unless you file Form 8840 for the closer connection exception, due by June 15 for most snowbirds. Do Canadian snowbirds have to register with the US government?
Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more who did not receive an I-94 record must register with USCIS. That includes most snowbirds who drive in at a land crossing.
Can Canadians fly into Orlando Sanford?
Not nonstop, on the airline table read in November 2026: Sanford had no current Canadian or UK service, and Flair's 2021 Sanford routes are no longer listed. Allegiant serves mostly US cities from Sanford.
What time zone is Orlando compared with Canada?
Orlando is on Eastern Time, the same as Ontario and Quebec. The Maritimes are an hour ahead and Manitoba an hour behind.
