Caledonia Golf and Fish Club is a public, 1994 Mike Strantz par 70 at Pawleys Island, on a former rice plantation on the Waccamaw River. Anyone can book it, carts are included, and one package operator listed it at $189 for an October 2026 date. Spring and fall are peak, and summer specials run from $129 in the morning.
It is the South Strand's best-known public round: live oaks with Spanish moss, marsh, small, well-guarded greens, and a closing hole across water to the clubhouse porch. This guide covers access, what it costs, the layout and how to pair it with True Blue. Prices were seen November 1, 2026 and change by season.

The layout
Caledonia is a lowcountry parkland course that rewards position over length. At 6,526 yards from the back it is short by modern standards, but the greens are small and well protected and several shots carry water and marsh, which is where the 138 slope comes from. The course record rates it 3 out of 5 for difficulty.
The finish is the reason people remember it. The par-4 18th plays across water to a green below the clubhouse porch, usually with an audience. The antebellum-style clubhouse has a grill room and dining over the marsh, and there is a fishing pond on site, the "Fish Club" part of the name. Practice is a driving range, putting green and chipping green.
Golf Digest's course page shows Caledonia 29th for 2025-26 (28th before), in what matches its South Carolina list rather than the national public list. The club also cites Golf Digest's America's 75 Best Golf Resorts for 2025, and a Golfweek Top 100 Public-Access listing without a rank. On GreenFeeTracker in May 2026 it showed a Google rating of 4.5 from 952 reviews.

The club publishes no spring or fall rack table; its FAQ says only that fees vary by season with spring and fall the peak. Online bookings go through the club's GuestDesk engine. An undated GolfLink estimate of about $254 with cart is just that, an estimate. For how this compares across the Strand, see Myrtle Beach golf rates.
Getting a tee time
Caledonia is public, but peak spring and fall weeks fill. Three routes:
- Direct: the club site or 1-800-483-6800. The booking window is not published.
- Caledonia Golf Vacations: the sister company sells stay-and-play packages with a three-night minimum and three rounds, based at the True Blue villas, and promises preferred pricing and tee-time access at both courses. This is the dependable route in peak weeks, and the villas put you 4 minutes from the first tee, which matters for an early start on a busy morning.
- Package operators: Caledonia appears on operators' sites; one listed the $189 rate above.
The Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort also features Caledonia in its packages. See Myrtle Beach tee times and Myrtle Beach golf packages for how the systems work.
Pairing Caledonia with True Blue
True Blue, opened in 1998, is Strantz at full size: 7,126 yards from the Black tees, very wide fairways, vast waste areas and big, contoured greens. It is usually the cheaper of the two and the tougher test. The two-course special needs one round at each within seven days, paid at the first course. Play Caledonia from the tees one step back from usual and True Blue one step forward. See our True Blue Golf Club guide and the True Blue course guide.
Conditions through the year
Caledonia overseeds in fall. A reviewer in November 2025 was told the course was cart-path-only because of overseeding; seed type and dates are not published. Grass types and aeration dates are also not published, so ask when you book a late-summer or early-fall round. Summer is the value season, with highs near 85F to 88F at the coast and storms on 11 to 13 days a month, so take the morning times. Read Myrtle Beach golf winter conditions for the overseed picture across the Strand.
Is Caledonia Golf and Fish Club worth the money?
For most groups, yes, as the one splurge of the trip. At $189 on a package rate for an October 2026 date, it sits with the Strand's other marquee rounds: Grande Dunes Resort was $222 for an October 23 morning on the same kind of rate, King's North $136 to $160 for November 1, and Prestwick $146 on its own tee sheet for a November 2 morning. The Dunes Club publishes no rate at all.
The trade-offs are real. Long hitters who judge a course by the driver will find 6,526 yards short, and peak-week tee times are hard to get without the package. If your group cares most about scenery, setting and a finish played in front of a gallery on the porch, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club is the pick. If it wants length and a beating, True Blue across the road does that better and usually costs less.
A three-day South Strand trip around Caledonia
A sample shape using drive times from the True Blue villas, not a package anyone sells:
- Day 1: True Blue, zero minutes from the villa door, to learn Strantz's greens on the bigger course.
- Day 2: Caledonia in the morning, 4 minutes away, inside the two-course seven-day window. Dinner at Frank's.
- Day 3: Heritage Club or River Club, both 6 minutes away, or Pawleys Plantation, 9.
Add TPC Myrtle Beach, 27 minutes north, for a fourth day.
Around Caledonia
- Stays: the True Blue villas (4 minutes), the Pawleys Plantation villas (9 minutes) and the Hampton Inn Pawleys Island (11 minutes).
- Other rounds nearby: Pawleys Plantation, the Nicklaus course, and Heritage Club, with its river-plantation setting and big greens. TPC Myrtle Beach is the drive north, see the TPC Myrtle Beach course guide.
- Dinner: Frank's and Frank's Outback on US 17 is the South Strand's splurge.
- Getting there: Myrtle Beach International (MYR) is the usual airport. Charleston (CHS), about 2.5 hours from the SkyWheel via US 17 through Georgetown, is a sensible alternative for a Pawleys Island group or a trip that adds a few days in Charleston.
