Kiva Dunes: the far end of Fort Morgan Road

Kiva Dunes sits on the narrow strip between the Gulf and Bon Secour Bay, about 13 miles west of the Hwy 59 beach intersection. It opened in 1995 and was renovated in 2015, when the greens were regrassed to TifEagle and the bunkers rebuilt. Golf Digest notes that storm-lost trees have left it more open and links-like.

Wind is the defense. The holes run east-west, so the Gulf breeze crosses nearly every fairway. Pick tees one set shorter than usual on a windy day. March is the windiest month at the Gulf Shores airport, averaging about 7.8 mph, and July to September the calmest, at about 5 mph. The Kiva Dunes course page has the tees and hole layout.

Peninsula: 27 holes beside the refuge

Peninsula is a member club in a residential community that sells daily-fee times to the public. Its three nines wind among live oaks, cypress, more than 30 lakes and marsh, next to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, with Mobile Bay views from Lakes #7. Watch for alligators and eagles.

  • Lakes has water on every hole.
  • Cypress is the longest nine, with forced carries.
  • Marsh has the most decisions off the tee, including a drivable par-4 sixth.

You can't book a specific 18: the superintendent picks which two nines are in play on the day. Since Thistle Hill Properties bought the club in July 2023, it has reported new TifEagle greens, tree removal, bunker work and a new GPS cart fleet.

For winter 2026-27 (November 15 to March 31), prices are dynamic from $89 and the club says the earlier you book, the lower the rate. Six-Pack cards were discontinued. There's a 3% fee on card payments. The Peninsula course page and our Peninsula Golf Club guide have the full ratings by combination.

Which of the Fort Morgan golf courses is harder?

Kiva Dunes, by the numbers. Its Gold tees rate 142 against Peninsula's hardest combination at 135, and its Blue tees rate 137 against 126 to 130 at Peninsula's #2 tees. Add the crosswind and hidden water, and Kiva is the tougher round for most players. Peninsula's forward tees are much gentler, with slopes of 103 to 106 from the #4 tees. See where both sit in our hardest golf courses in Gulf Shores ranking.

A 36-hole day on Fort Morgan Road

The two courses are about 13 minutes apart, so Fort Morgan is the easiest place on the Alabama Gulf Coast to play 36 in a day.

  1. Morning at Peninsula. Book direct and early for the lowest dynamic rate. The Bar & Grill is open to the public daily, 7:30 am to 3 pm.
  2. Afternoon at Kiva Dunes. Twilight starts around 1 pm from November to January and about 2 pm in October and February, worth $30 to $40 off per player. Kiva Grill in the Lodge has a full bar.

Reverse it in summer, when an early start at Kiva beats the heat. Our 36 holes a day in Gulf Shores guide covers daylight and other pairings.

Kiva Dunes Beach Resort. Kiva Lodge (23 condos) and Kiva Village (30 renovated condos) overlook the course, plus beach homes. Renters who book direct get discounted golf and preferred tee times, except in peak golf season, and Kiva Beach Club access (open March to November). Stay & Play packages for 2 to 100 golfers can mix Kiva with Peninsula, Craft Farms or Gulf Shores Golf Club; call 866-540-7100.

Gulf Shores Plantation. The cheaper way to stay on the beach next to Kiva. Units are individually owned, mostly 1-2 bedrooms with some up to 6, and groups usually rent two adjacent 2-bedroom condos. There's no central front desk, so fees and quality depend on the manager you book with.

The Beach Club. About 225 rental units across four towers plus lakeside cottages, with five outdoor pools, a heated indoor pool, a spa and restaurants. A 4- or 5-bedroom unit can house a full golf group. Read the cancellation terms first; they're strict, and there's a $40 per-vehicle registration fee.

Our Gulf Shores golf resorts and golf packages guides compare these with stays elsewhere.

Fort Morgan golf courses for groups

Both clubs sell to groups, and the packages cross the road:

  • Kiva Dunes Stay & Play covers 2 to 100 golfers, with rounds at Kiva or a mix with Peninsula, Craft Farms or Gulf Shores Golf Club, a morning or afternoon tee-time preference and optional breakfast at Kiva Grill. Groups get free Golf Genius live scoring and tournament management. Pricing varies by season and is quoted on request (866-540-7100).
  • Peninsula and Craft Farms are sister clubs under Thistle Hill Properties. Groups can book Peninsula and Craft Farms together, 63 holes in all, through Kevin Whitney at 251-968-8009. Group packages at Peninsula include unlimited range use.
  • Coastal Alabama Golf sells packages built around Kiva Dunes, including ones named "The Elite" and "Fort Morgan's Finest"; prices weren't published.

For a group of eight, a 4- or 5-bedroom unit at The Beach Club, or two adjacent 2-bedroom condos at Gulf Shores Plantation, keeps everyone within 3 minutes of Kiva's first tee.

The downside of a Fort Morgan base

Everything else is a drive. From Kiva Dunes Beach Resort it's about 27 minutes to Craft Farms, 37 to GlenLakes, 53 to Lost Key, 66 to Lakewood at the Grand Hotel and 111 to Magnolia Grove. If your group wants six different courses in a week, a central Gulf Shores hotel on Hwy 59 saves time. If you want Kiva and Peninsula twice each with the beach at the door, Fort Morgan is ideal.

When is the best time for Fort Morgan golf?

October and November bring highs of about 70°F to 79°F, lighter winds than spring (about 6 mph at the Gulf Shores airport) and falling Kiva rates. December and January are the cheapest at Kiva, with coastal highs near 61°F to 64°F. Peninsula pitches itself as the winter pick, claiming green, dry turf all season; confirm conditions when you book. Our winter overseed guide explains what dormant bermuda looks like from December to February. March and April are peak season, and Kiva's spring rates weren't posted when we checked.
