Drawn hole routing: Kiva Dunes Golf Club in Gulf Shores: Wind, Fees, Tees, Booking and Where to Stay

Kiva Dunes golf means a windy, links-style Jerry Pate course on the Fort Morgan peninsula, about 24 minutes west of central Gulf Shores. It is the top-ranked public course in the area (Golf Digest's #13 in Alabama for 2025-26), plays 7,122 yards from the Gold tees with a 74.9 rating and 142 slope, and cost about $107 to $175 a round with cart on the tee sheet seen in October 2026, depending on date and time of day.

It is also the priciest round on the beach side of Alabama Gulf Coast golf, so it pays to know the details before you book Kiva Dunes golf. This guide covers the layout and the wind, the tees, fees by month, the booking rules and where to stay.

Where it sits: the far end of Fort Morgan Road

Kiva Dunes is on a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Mexico and Bon Secour Bay. It is the farthest course out on Fort Morgan Road, so from a hotel on Hwy 59 you are looking at about 20 minutes each way, and from Orange Beach about 33 to 37 minutes.

The useful pairing is Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club, about 13 minutes back toward town on the same road. Play one in the morning and the other the next day, or both on a 36-hole day, and you avoid driving the peninsula twice. Our Peninsula golf club guide has the details.

How Kiva Dunes golf plays: wind first

The course is links-style: native dune grasses, lagoons and canals, sweeping Australian-style bunkers, and low greens you can run the ball onto. Golf Digest notes that the holes run east to west, so the Gulf breeze blows across nearly every fairway, and that you often have to aim at trouble and let the wind bring the ball back.

The course lost many trees in a storm some years ago, which Golf Digest says made it more open and links-like. That also means there is little to block the wind. On a breezy day, play one set of tees shorter than you normally would.

Reviewers say hidden water and bunkers catch first-timers. The club publishes a free yardage book PDF on its site. Download it before you play.

Some numbers from the mapped layout (yardages are measured from our course map, not the card, and no hole handicaps are published in our data):

Hole Par Yards (mapped)

74460
83160
133154
145568
155527
173213
184460

The two long par 3s, the 3rd and the 17th, are where a crosswind costs you most. The back nine has back-to-back par 5s at 14 and 15, and the round closes with a 460-yard par 4. The course has no published signature hole.

It has hosted PGA Tour Q-school stages in the past, according to Golf Digest and the club.

Tees and ratings

Five sets, all par 72. Ratings are current USGA figures (checked October 2026). The club's Chronogolf page still shows an older card (Gold 7,203 yards, 73.6 / 134).

Tee Yards Rating / slope
Gold7,12274.9 / 142
Blue6,50572.0 / 137
White5,87869.6 / 124
Green5,49568.0 / 116
Red (women's rating)5,00670.0 / 123

Older cards on other sites show lower numbers, so expect differences between sources. The 142 slope from the back (137 from the Blues) makes it one of the stiffer tests on the Gulf Shores golf courses list, and the wind adds to it.

When to play Kiva Dunes

Kiva Dunes is open year-round. Its own rate tiers fall from late October into November, bottom out in December and January, and rise again from mid-February into the spring peak.

At the Pensacola reference station, January highs average about 61°F, March is the windiest month (about 7.8 mph daily average at the Gulf Shores airport), and October brings highs near 79°F with about seven rain days. Is Kiva Dunes worth it?

For a first golf trip to Gulf Shores, yes. Kiva Dunes golf is the round most visitors remember. It has the best ranking of any public course in the area, and the wind gives it a character the inland courses don't have. The catch is price and distance. At $130 to $175 in the morning it costs more than its neighbors: Gulf Shores Golf Club was $139 on an October morning, and the Craft Farms winter Six-Pack works out to $70 a round. It is also a 20-minute drive down Fort Morgan Road from the Hwy 59 hotels. Book a twilight time, pair it with Peninsula, and it is easy to justify. See how it stacks up in the best golf courses in Gulf Shores.

Plan it on the map

The Gulf Shores golf map shows Kiva Dunes at the end of the Fort Morgan peninsula with every hotel and its drive time. Click the course to see each hole's par and length, and compare it with Peninsula and the Craft Farms courses before you book.
