Cover: The best golf resort in Tucson depends on the golfer: here is how to choose

The best golf resort in Tucson depends on what you want from the golf. Omni Tucson National is best for playing a lot (36 holes on site). The JW Marriott Starr Pass is best for the strongest course near town. Loews Ventana Canyon and the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain are best for golf you cannot otherwise book.

The trick is to pick the resort for the course, not the other way round. Here is how each one fits a type of golfer, with the catches that should change your mind.

Quick facts

  • Golf-first group: Omni Tucson National.
  • Best single course near town: JW Marriott Starr Pass.
  • Fazio desert golf, quieter setting: Loews Ventana Canyon.
  • Splurge and Nicklaus golf: The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.
  • Quiet and ranch-style: Tubac Golf Resort.
  • Golf plus nightlife: Casino Del Sol with Sewailo.
  • Room rates: not captured for 2026-27; check each brand.

The golf-first pick: Omni Tucson National

If the trip is about rounds, Omni wins. The Catalina course is 7,262 yards from the Blue tees (75.4/136), the 1962 course whose 18th closed out tour events through 2023. The Sonoran course is a shorter par 70, 6,529 yards with 69 bunkers. Both take public play with carts included, and Crooked Tree is 8 minutes away for a cheaper third course.

The catch is location: northwest Tucson, a fair drive from the foothills. Our Omni Tucson National golf guide covers both courses.

The best-course pick: Starr Pass

Starr Pass is our top-ranked course a visitor can book, 11 minutes from downtown. Its three desert nines got new TifEagle greens and rebuilt bunkers, and the clubhouse and Creosote restaurant reopened on November 1, 2025. Because the course sells public times, you could stay elsewhere and still play it; you stay here to walk to the first tee. See the Starr Pass course guide.

The access picks: Loews and the Ritz-Carlton

These are the only ways most visitors get onto two of Tucson's best courses.

At Loews, the Ventana Canyon Mountain and Canyon courses alternate daily between member and resort play. Mountain has the 107-yard 3rd over a ravine. The resort charge seen was $39 plus tax, which includes self-parking. Our Ventana Canyon golf guide explains the rotation.

At the Ritz-Carlton, The Golf Club at Dove Mountain is open to members and resort guests only. It is the most expensive package in the area: peak rates listed at $250 to $360 in 2024, a resort charge of about $68.73 and valet-only parking at $42 a day. See the Dove Mountain course guide.

The quiet pick: Tubac

Tubac Golf Resort is old-school: mesquite-lined nines on the historic Otero Ranch, with an original nine dating from 1959 and the Tin Cup hole on Rancho #4. A listing for June 10, 2026 ran $42.09 to $55.95 for 18. It is about an hour from downtown, and only Rancho and Otero are open until the Anza nine returns in early 2027.

The fun pick: Casino Del Sol and Sewailo

Sewailo is a modern Notah Begay III design with real length (7,283 yards from Bear Down) and dynamic pricing. The casino resort brings restaurants, bars and gaming, plus smoke and noise near the floor. It is the best golf resort in Tucson for a group that wants the evening as much as the morning.

The one to check first: Westin La Paloma

The Westin sits beside La Paloma Country Club, a private 27-hole Nicklaus club and, since 2024, the home of the Cologuard Classic. Older sources say Westin guests could play; that was not confirmed for 2026. If La Paloma golf is the reason you are booking, get it in writing. Our La Paloma golf guide has the details.

Questions to ask before you book

Whichever resort you pick, a few questions save trouble:

  1. Is guest golf guaranteed on my dates? It matters most at Loews, the Ritz-Carlton and the Westin La Paloma, where the courses are not public.
  2. Which course is open? Ventana Canyon alternates its courses daily between member and resort play, and Tubac's Anza nine is closed until about January 2027.
  3. Is the course overseeding? Many Tucson courses close or restrict play from mid-September into October.
  4. What is the resort fee, and does it include parking? Loews' $39 plus tax includes self-parking and Tubac's about $31.98 includes parking. The Ritz-Carlton is valet only at $42 a day.
  5. How far ahead can I book tee times? None of the resort courses publishes a window.

Cheaper bases near resort golf

If the golf is public, you do not have to sleep at the resort. The Holiday Inn Express Tucson North - Marana is 13 minutes from Omni Tucson National. The Holiday Inn Express Oro Valley is 9 minutes from the El Conquistador courses. The Best Western Green Valley Inn is 5 minutes from Haven and about 30 minutes from Tubac. These are plain hotels with free breakfast; dated rates were not captured. For Ventana Canyon and Dove Mountain there is no such shortcut, because you need the resort stay to play.

When the resort is the wrong answer

For a week or more, or for a winter, a resort usually costs more than it gives back. Snowbirds tend to rent monthly in Green Valley, Oro Valley or SaddleBrooke and play the public courses. El Conquistador Tucson in Oro Valley is the middle ground. See where to stay in Tucson for golf and Tucson winter golf. For a golf-first trip, Omni Tucson National is the most complete: 36 holes on site, including the old tour course, with public access and free self-parking listed on a 2026 group page. For the best single course you can walk to, choose the JW Marriott Starr Pass. For golf you cannot otherwise play, choose Loews Ventana Canyon or the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.

Which Tucson golf resort is best for a buddies trip?

Omni Tucson National suits a golf-first group: 36 holes without driving and cheap parking. Casino Del Sol suits a group that wants nightlife too, with Sewailo on the grounds and free parking listed. Starr Pass works for groups that want 27 holes and a big-resort base close to town.

Which Tucson golf resort is best for couples?

Loews Ventana Canyon suits couples who want Fazio desert golf and a foothills setting, and the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain is the splurge. Tubac is the quiet, ranch-style option, about an hour south, with Tubac village nearby.

Is the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain worth it for golf?

Only if you want the Nicklaus 27 badly enough to pay for it. Only members and Ritz-Carlton guests can play, peak green fees were listed at $250 to $360 in 2024, and the resort charge (about $68.73) and valet ($42 a day) are the highest seen in the area.

Can I stay at the Westin La Paloma to play La Paloma?

Older sources say Westin guests could book tee times at the private La Paloma club, but the 2026 policy was not confirmed. Ask the hotel directly before you count on it.

Dated room rates could not be read for 2026-27, so we cannot rank by price. On published add-ons, Tubac's resort fee of about $31.98 includes parking, and Omni listed free self-parking. Tubac also sells stay-and-play packages; ask for current prices.

Which Tucson golf resort is best for a snowbird stay?
