All 18 holes: Boulders Golf Club: which course visitors can play, and how the resort fits in

Boulders Golf Club is the Jay Morrish 36 in Carefree, routed through piles of giant granite boulders: visitors book the South Course, and the North is the members' course in most sources. The South takes public and resort-guest tee times online, about 38 minutes north of Old Town Scottsdale. Peak fees were last seen at $280 to $350.

This guide covers what each course is, who can play it, what the Boulders Golf Club costs, overseed, and how the Boulders Resort fits a trip. Where sources conflict, we say so.

Quick facts

  • Courses: South (par 71, the one visitors play) and North (par 72, members' course in most sources). Both by Jay Morrish.
  • Book: non-member tee times at thebouldersresort.ezlinks.com; golf desk 480-488-9028.
  • Fees: no official 2026 card; $280 to $350 at peak per an unofficial 2024 guide, cart included.
  • Greens: TifEagle bermuda on both courses, not overseeded.
  • Stay: Boulders Resort & Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton, 2 minutes from the South tee.
  • Drive: about 38 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale.

Red, women4,684 (67.7/116)4,900 (68.1/116)

Men's ratings except where marked. The South also has Blue/White (6,421, 70.8/137) and White/Copper (5,863, 68.7/125) combo tees, and women's ratings from the White (75.3/138) and Copper (73.1/130). The North's women's ratings are 75.8/137 from the White and 73.5/135 from the Copper.

The South Course

The Boulders South is a desert resort course among the boulder piles, strategic rather than brutal. Its TifEagle greens went in during 2022, and the par-4 and par-5 tees were redone in summer 2025. It sits at #41 on Golf Digest's Arizona list for 2025/26, per Where2Golf.

The South plays shorter than its card suggests, which makes it a good pick for couples and mixed groups. A 140-plus slope from the Black and Blue tees is still a serious number, so most visitors will be happier from the White or the White/Copper combo.

What comes with the round:

  • Cart: included.
  • Practice: a practice facility and Golf Academy with PGA and LPGA instructors (details not published).
  • Extras: pro shops at both courses, club rentals and Caddiemaster caddies.

See the Boulders South course guide.

The North Course and who can play it

The Boulders North is the original 1985 course. It reopened on October 13, 2025, after a five-month renovation that restored the greens to their original size, resurfaced them to TifEagle and releveled every tee.

Access is the open question at the Boulders Golf Club:

  • Where2Golf: the North has been the members' course of The Boulders Club since 2023, with visitors only as a member's guest.
  • GolfNow and Top100: the two courses rotate daily between public and guest play and members.
  • The resort's own page (read November 3, 2026): lists a non-member tee-time link and a member link but does not say which course non-members get.

Plan your trip around one Boulders round on the South. If North access matters, ask the golf desk (480-488-9028) or email PHXRS_Golf@Hilton.com before you book. Membership questions go to 480-488-7349. More in private golf clubs in Scottsdale.

Booking the Boulders South

The resort's golf page has two booking channels, and visitors use the first:

  1. Non-member tee times: thebouldersresort.ezlinks.com, for the public and resort guests.
  2. Boulders Club member times: a separate members' site, not for visitors.

The public booking window was not published. For a stay-and-play, contact the golf desk at 480-488-9028 or PHXRS_Golf@Hilton.com, and ask in the same call which course non-members get on your dates. If your group is set on a February or March morning, book early: January to April is peak golf across the Valley, and the tee sheets are tightest in WM Phoenix Open and spring-training weeks.

Who the Boulders Golf Club suits

  • Couples and mixed groups: the South plays shorter than its card, with combo tees down to 5,863 yards and women's tees to 4,684.
  • A resort stay with golf at the door: the South is 2 minutes from the rooms.
  • One special round on a north Valley trip: pair it with Troon North or a cheaper public course nearby.
  • Not for: groups who want both Boulders courses, since North access is uncertain, or a budget trip, given the peak figures seen.

Rates are dynamic and change by date. Like most of the Valley, expect the top of the range from January to April, with WM Phoenix Open week (February 8-14, 2027) and spring training from February 19, 2027 the busiest stretch. June to September is the cheap season. See Scottsdale golf rates for how the Boulders compares.

Overseed and when to go

Both Boulders courses have TifEagle greens that are not overseeded, per the resort's press release. Fairways are typically overseeded with rye in fall, but the 2026 dates were not published, so call before booking a late September to early November round.

Phoenix Sky Harbor's normals give a sense of the season: November highs of 76.5F, December 66.2F and January 67.6F, with January lows of 46.0F. Those are airport figures, about 10 miles from Old Town; no Carefree station was used, so treat them as a guide for an early tee time. Read the Phoenix golf overseed guide for the course-by-course fall picture.

Staying at the Boulders Resort

Boulders Resort & Spa is a Curio Collection by Hilton property in Carefree with casitas and villas, Hilton Honors points, a spa, tennis and 12 pickleball courts.

  • Golf: both courses at the door, 2 minutes to the South and 4 to the North. The South is the sure thing for guests.
  • Watch: the North rotation or member rule is not clearly published; ask when you book.
  • Location: 35 to 45 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale, so it is a quiet base rather than a nightlife one.
  • Best for: couples and small groups who want a secluded desert resort with golf on site.

Room rates were not captured. For other resort options, including the Four Seasons at Troon North and the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, each about 21 minutes from the South, see Scottsdale golf resorts.

Private clubs around the Boulders

The Boulders sits in a ring of members' clubs, none open to visitors without a member:

  • Terravita: private, member-owned, 4 minutes from the resort; members and accompanied guests.
  • Whisper Rock Lower: about 300 members by invitation, 7 minutes away; no public, stay or reciprocal access published.
  • Desert Forest: the 1962 original of desert golf, 7 minutes away; members and their guests.

Questions golfers ask

Can the public play The Boulders Golf Club?

Yes, on the South Course. The resort's golf page sells non-member tee times to the public and to resort guests through thebouldersresort.ezlinks.com, and members book on a separate site. The North Course is the members' course in most sources.

Can Boulders Resort guests play the North Course?

It is not clear. One guide says the North has been the members' course of The Boulders Club since 2023, with visitors only as a member's guest. GolfNow and Top100 say the two courses rotate daily between public and member play, so ask the golf desk (480-488-9028) about your dates before you book.

How much does it cost to play the Boulders South Course?

No official 2026 rate card was found. Where2Golf, updated in 2024 and unofficial, gives $280 to $350 at peak high-season times, with dynamic pricing and the cart included. For stay-and-play rates, contact the golf desk at 480-488-9028 or PHXRS_Golf@Hilton.com.

Who designed the Boulders golf courses?

Jay Morrish designed both, and the club dates to 1985 (that year refers to the first course; the South's own opening year is not confirmed). Arthur Schaupeter led the 2025 North renovation and the South's 2025 tee work.

Are the Boulders greens overseeded?

No. Both courses have TifEagle ultradwarf bermuda greens, which the resort's press release says are not overseeded; the South's were converted in 2022 and the North's in 2025. Fairways are typically overseeded with rye in fall, but 2026 dates were not published.

How far is The Boulders from Old Town Scottsdale?

About 38 minutes and 21.7 miles to the South Course in free-flow traffic. The resort is 2 minutes from the South and 4 minutes from the North.

Is the Boulders South Course hard?

It is par 71 and 6,917 yards from the Black tees at 72.9/142, so the back tees are a real test. From the White/Copper (5,863 yards, 68.7/125) or Copper (5,642 yards, 67.6/120) it is much gentler, and the course is known to play shorter than the card.
