One flag per course: The Villages golf for visitors: what non-residents can and cannot play, and the public courses nearby

The Villages golf for visitors comes down to one honest answer: the courses are run for residents, and the rule for outsiders is not confirmed. Older resident posts say non-residents could play the championship courses, not the executives, for a non-resident fee, booked only on the day. For a sure tee time, use Harbor Hills in Lady Lake, Arlington Ridge in Leesburg or Mission Inn.

The Villages sits about 72 minutes north-west of downtown Orlando, just off our map, and with Leesburg it is a major retirement and snowbird area in its own right. This guide to The Villages golf for visitors sets out what our research found, what it could not confirm, and the public golf around it. Prices were seen in November 2026 and change.

Quick facts

  • The Villages: 12 championship courses plus executive courses, run for residents.
  • Visitor access: not confirmed; dated forum posts describe day-of-play non-resident tee times on championship courses only.
  • Resident's guests: guest-pass holders pay guest rates (older posts).
  • Sure public option: Harbor Hills Country Club, Lady Lake, from $51.99 on GolfNow.
  • Status unclear: The Plantation Golf Club, Leesburg.
  • Drive: about 72 minutes from downtown Orlando.

What visitors can play at The Villages

The Villages runs its golf under Golf The Villages. The site, read on November 4, 2026, shows 12 championship courses and a set of executive courses, with a booking contact. Its Google rating, across the golf listing, is 4.3. Our research classes the golf as private: the courses exist for residents.

The visitor route is uncertain. Posts on the resident forum Talk of The Villages, from 2009 to 2012, say:

  • Non-residents may play the championship courses, but not the executive courses, for a non-resident green fee.
  • Non-residents can book only on the day of play, through a course pro shop.
  • Residents' guests with a guest pass pay guest rates.

Those posts are old, and the official policy page could not be read, so treat all three points as unconfirmed. Call the Villages Tee Time Office (352-750-4558) before you plan a round. For a trip, do not build your week around a Villages tee time you cannot reserve in advance.

Drive times are free-flow estimates from downtown Orlando; from The Villages, the Lake County courses are closer, but those drives were not measured.

Harbor Hills Country Club

Harbor Hills is a member club in Lady Lake, beside The Villages, that sells public tee times through its own online tee sheet and on GolfNow. It is a Lloyd Clifton par 72, and the club site quotes a Golf Digest four-star rating. GolfNow showed tee times from $51.99 for November 5, 2026, and Google rates it 4.5. The research names it the obvious course for snowbirds around The Villages or Leesburg who cannot get on Villages courses. See the Harbor Hills course guide.

Arlington Ridge

Arlington Ridge in Leesburg calls itself a public course and also sells membership programs, with online tee times. No rates were published. It is about 17 minutes from Mission Resort + Club.

Black Bear, Deer Island and Mount Dora

  • Black Bear north of Eustis is P.B. Dye's big, open course, 7,041 yards from the back, and the research calls it the strongest public test in Lake County at local prices. Juniors 15 and under pay $15, or play free with a paying adult on weekdays. See the Black Bear course guide.
  • Deer Island near Tavares is an inexpensive lakeside course; watch GolfNow for deals.
  • Mount Dora Golf Club is a 1945 town course, par 70 and 5,700 yards, which the club calls "the longest 5,700 yards in Florida." Pair it with lunch downtown. The Country Club of Mount Dora is private, for members' guests only.

Further south: Mission Inn

Mission Resort + Club in Howey-in-the-Hills has two 18s open to the public, El Campeon (with its island-green 16th) and Las Colinas, a 1992 Gary Koch course. It is the main resort golf in Lake County and a natural day out from The Villages. See Mission Inn golf and the El Campeon course guide.

Budget courses toward Orlando

Eagle Dunes and RedTail in Sorrento showed tee times from $24 and $17.99 on GolfNow for November 5, 2026. Both are practical only for Mount Dora or Sorrento stays.

Status unclear: The Plantation and Water Oak

The Plantation Golf Club in Leesburg, with its Otter Creek and Cranes Roost courses, could not be confirmed: its domain did not work in November 2026, though both courses are still mapped. Status unclear, call first. Water Oak is named in our research as a nearby public alternative, but we have no record of its courses, status or prices. Neither is on our map.

Where to stay

Our map has no hotel inside The Villages. The two stays closest to this corner are Mission Resort + Club, with two courses on site and a resort fee of unpublished size, and the Clerbrook Golf & RV Resort, a large snowbird RV park with its own course, about 18 minutes from Arlington Ridge. The research also names Mount Dora, Tavares and Howey-in-the-Hills as condo and home bases for snowbirds. See Orlando snowbird rentals.

Snowbird notes

The Orlando snowbird season runs about November to April, peaking January to March, and The Villages and Leesburg are part of it. Canadian snowbirds should know the separate limits that apply to a long winter: US immigration (normally up to six months for tourists), the IRS substantial presence test, and provincial health coverage rules. Since April 11, 2025, Canadians aged 14 and over staying 30 days or more without an I-94 record must register with USCIS. This is general information, not legal or tax advice; see Canadian snowbirds in Orlando and Orlando winter golf.

When to play

Lake County shares Orlando's climate: NOAA normals at Orlando International give about 72F highs and 50F lows in January, and November is the driest month. Frost can delay first tee times after strong cold fronts in January. June to September is hot, wet and cheap, with afternoon storms most days.

Who this suits

The Villages golf for visitors suits people visiting residents, and snowbirds who can confirm resident-ID privileges with their rental. Everyone else should book Harbor Hills, Black Bear or Mission Inn and treat a Villages round as a bonus. For other clubs that are closed to the public, see private golf clubs in Orlando, and for the courses further south, Clermont golf courses.

Plan it on the map

Open the Orlando golf map to see The Villages, Harbor Hills and the Lake County courses north-west of Orlando. The $49 plan can cover a whole winter stay with a weekly rotation of courses you can actually book.
