What kind of course is Pala Mesa?

Pala Mesa Resort Golf Course opened in 1961, so it comes from an earlier generation of Southern California resort golf than Journey at Pechanga (2008) or Redhawk (1990). Our record calls it a tree-lined, rolling older layout with quick greens. William H. Johnson and Dave Fleming are credited as the designers.

The par 5s run 442 to 519 yards, and the par 3s are all short, from 147 to 162 yards. The third hole at 380 yards is the number 1 handicap hole. The par 4s are mostly modest, with the longest at 410 yards, and the par 3s are short-iron holes. Quick greens and tree-lined rolling fairways are the story more than raw length, though the 73.5 rating from the Black tees says it is no pushover.

Google reviewers give the property 4.1 stars from 1,427 reviews. Our take: a gentler day than the newer layouts, and a good pairing with the resort stay.

Pala Mesa rates and booking

The resort's golf page is live, with a TeeItUp booking link and golf shop hours. The "Tee Times & Rates" and "Specials & Packages" pages were not read, so we have only one dated price signal:

Source What it says
GolfPassfrom $69, undated
palamesa.com rates pagenot read
Packagesnot read

That is thin. Do not plan a budget around $69 without checking. A booking window is not stated on the page read. Book through the TeeItUp link on palamesa.com/golf, or call 760-728-5881. Our Temecula tee times guide explains how booking systems differ across the valley, and the Temecula golf rates guide lists the other courses for comparison.

Staying at Pala Mesa Resort

The Pala Mesa Resort is a 128-room property. The hotel page says the course is next to the hotel. In our map data, the hotel pin is about 9 minutes by road from the course pin, so ask the resort how long the walk or ride to the first tee is.

Plan for a resort fee. The page says one applies and that it includes parking, but the amount was not listed. Room rates were also not shown on the accommodations page. The resort sits in Fallbrook, south of the main Temecula valley.

Two other bases work. The Quality Inn Fallbrook I-15 is a budget room about 10 minutes from the course, and the Pala Casino Spa & Resort is about 21 minutes away. One listing puts Pala Casino about 11 minutes from Pala Mesa, so the two sources disagree. For the full picture, see our guides to Pala Casino as a golf base and Temecula golf resorts.

Pala Mesa compared with other resort rounds

Course Access Rate seen Drive from Old Town
Pala MesaResort, publicfrom $69 (GolfPass, undated)22 min
Journey at PechangaResort, public$175 hotel guest, $215 public10 min
Temecula Creek InnResort, public$35 to $95 (undated listing)5 min
The Golf Club of CaliforniaSemi-private$45 to $100 (SCGA, undated)23 min

The comparison mixes dated and undated figures, so treat it as a rough ladder. Journey at Pechanga is the premium price. Pala Mesa and Temecula Creek Inn sit well below it on the numbers we have, and both have hotels attached. The Temecula Creek Inn golf guide and the Journey at Pechanga guide cover the other two.

Is Pala Mesa worth the drive?

It is a 22-minute drive from Old Town, with the road running south through Fallbrook. That is not far, but it is the opposite direction from the wine roads on Rancho California Road. Pala Mesa makes the most sense in two cases:

  • You are basing in Fallbrook or at Pala. Then it is minutes away, and the Golf Club of California is nearby too.
  • You want an older, tree-lined round after a few modern desert-style or wine-country courses.

If you are basing near Old Town, Pechanga, Redhawk and the Legends are all closer. See the Fallbrook golf guide for the area, including the Golf Club of California, where public access is unclear, and Rancho Monserate, which is private. Fallbrook Golf Club closed in 2016.

For timing, the best time to golf in Temecula covers the seasons. For the course list, see Temecula golf courses. An overseed schedule is not published, so ask the golf shop about winter conditions. Golfers combining golf with wine tasting should arrange a driver or tour.
