What is Pala Mesa like?
Pala Mesa was opened in 1961 and designed by William H. Johnson and Dave Fleming. It is a tree-lined, rolling older resort layout with quick greens, kikuyu fairways and greens per GolfPass, and it is open year-round. The resort has a range, putting green, chipping area, bunker and the Aquaterra restaurant. Google rates it 4.1 across 1,427 reviews, shared with the hotel.
Our read is that it is a gentler day than the newer Temecula layouts. Tee times book through TeeItUp, and the booking window is not stated. Reviews mention an ownership change, with the owner not named. Read the Pala Mesa golf guide and the Pala Mesa course guide.
What is the access at the Golf Club of California?
The Golf Club of California is a 2002 Bermuda-grass layout at 3742 Flowerwood Ln, listed at 6,892 yards from the Black tees. It is a hilly layout, and Google rates it 4.4 across 347 reviews. JC Golf manages it.
Access is the question. A JC Golf page says it is open to the public seven days with membership optional. Older listings say members and guests only. An aggregator summary gives public players a seven-day booking window, but that is unverified. The SCGA lists $45 to $100, undated. Call 760-451-3737 before building a trip around it. Proper golf attire is required. See the Golf Club of California guide and the course guide.
Private and closed Fallbrook courses
Rancho Monserate is a nine-hole, par-27 Robert Trent Jones course from 1973 inside a 55-plus community, for members, residents and their guests only. It is not a visitor option. Pauma Valley Country Club, 34 minutes away, is private too; see private golf clubs near Temecula.
Fallbrook Golf Club on Gird Road closed in 2016 after a brief reopening, and its 116 acres were sold in November 2016 and planted as a vineyard and winery. San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort in Bonsall closed in August 2014 and was redeveloped as Myrtle Creek at San Luis Rey. Both are covered in closed golf courses near Temecula.
Where to stay for Fallbrook golf
Pala Mesa Resort has 128 rooms beside the course, with a resort fee that covers parking, amount not listed. The Quality Inn Fallbrook I-15 is 10 minutes from Pala Mesa and 9 from the Golf Club of California. Pala Casino Spa & Resort is another base; see Pala Casino golf. Hotel rates were not captured, so check dates directly.
How Fallbrook fits a Temecula golf trip
Fallbrook is a change-of-pace day: older resort golf at Pala Mesa, then back up the I-15. At 22 minutes from Old Town, a morning round at Pala Mesa and an afternoon back in the valley is realistic. For the whole region, read Temecula golf courses, and for stays that unlock courses Temecula golf resorts. If your base is the valley, where to stay in Temecula for golf compares the options.
What should you know about booking in Fallbrook?
Pala Mesa books through TeeItUp and its booking window is not stated on the resort page. The Golf Club of California is the one that needs a phone call: 760-451-3737 is the quickest way to settle whether public tee times are available on your date, and to confirm whether the seven-day public window quoted by one aggregator is right.
Fallbrook is also a story of what has gone. Two former public courses, Fallbrook Golf Club and San Luis Rey Downs, are closed, and one of them is now a vineyard and winery. That leaves the area with two bookable courses and one private nine, so a Fallbrook day is usually a single round rather than a choice.
Is Fallbrook worth the drive from Temecula?
For Pala Mesa, yes if you like older, tree-lined resort golf and want a change from the valley's newer layouts. For the Golf Club of California, only after you have confirmed access. Both are 22 to 23 minutes from Old Town, which is closer than Menifee Lakes or Hemet, so Fallbrook is one of the easier day trips. A Pala Mesa stay suits golfers who want to walk to the first tee.
